Overview & Installation of ZDM7 / Installing ZDM7 pt. 2

Subtitles of the Movie

So now we're able to move on to the Desktop Management Services installation in our ZENworks 7 install. So, we'll choose Desktop Management Services. You're given a little blurb at the beginning that gives some actual useful information: If you're installing this product on a network server you have to unload Java because the installation process extends Java on the Network Server. It tells you you have to have Admin Rights to the eDirectory tree that you're installing the objects into, obviously, and if you're installing on a Windows Server, which we are, you have to have Administrator Rights or equivalent to install the product on the Windows Server, in this case we'll hit Next, and of course we have to agree to the License, so we'll click Next again. We're now presented with the Installation prerequisites. We went over these prerequisites elsewhere in the Title, but we will just revisit Windows Server 2003, a minimum of a Pentium III with 256 Megs of RAM, Novell eDirectory 8.7.3, LDAP IP, and if we are installing a middle tier server they all have to be in the same Active Directory domain. We meet all these requirements on our Zen Server so we'll hit Next. Next, we are prompted which tree to install the product into. We'll hit the Browse button and we'll choose VTC Tree. We could choose to not extend the Schema if we had previously done so, even though we've previously done so I'll leave this box checked just so you can see the process from beginning to end. So, we'll hit Next. It tells us the selected tree already has the Schema Extensions, do you wish to Reextend the Schema? Again, we'll say yes, just to be on the safe side. The Schema extensions come from the same location on the CD so I'm pretty sure they're identical. Again, we're asked for a License Code. Since we don't have a License Code we have a 90-day evaluation, so we'll hit Next. And now we are presented with a Server Selection screen. By default, the only thing currently selected is the Local Workstation, and on the Local Workstation we're going to install the Desktop Management Services Snap-ins for ConsoleOne. In our case we obviously wish to install the product on actual ZENworks Servers, so we'll click Add Servers, and we are presented with an Add Servers window. You can browse for the Server in the tree, or if you have a very large tree you can enter the IP Address. Since there's only one server in our tree, and you'll notice it has a little Windows Server 2003 logo next to it, we will highlight our VTC Zen Server in DS, which is the in DS representation of our Server 2003, and we'll choose this button to select the server. Now that we've selected the server we'll hit OK. The installation process now interrogates that server to see what it is capable of running, and after a short while we are brought back to the Server Selection screen. You'll see that by default it's chosen Desktop Management Services, which has to be installed on every server that you install any of the ZENworks components on. If we expand that out it just shows us that it's installing the application and workstation management portions of the ZENworks product on this Server, and we can additionally install other roles to this Server. For the time being on this Server we will choose the Desktop Management Database, the Inventory Database, and the Inventory Server, and the Workstation Import and Removal Server. Once we have chosen what pieces of software get installed on which Server, and again, you can install the same products on multiple servers throughout the tree; in this case we only selected one, but if we had 15 servers you could do the same thing on all 15 servers and install them all in one fell swoop. In this case we have the option selected we wish to install on the server so we'll hit Next. Now we are prompted for the Volume or Drive location where the Inventory and Remote Management software is to be installed. It defaults to Drive C but if you've administered a Windows Server at all you know that you don't really want to install these products to Drive C. So, we'll hit this Browse button and choose to install to Drive D. Let's use that, and hit Next. The same thing for the Database Path; we will install the databases on Drive D. We are not prompted for the location for the Server Package. The Server Package is a policy package that pushes out certain server settings for ZENworks Servers. In this case we won't specify an organizational unit yet because we'll cover that when we cover ZENworks Policies, and we'll hit Next. And we're presented with an Installation Summary. It tells us what products will be installed on which servers; that all is correct; so, we'll hit Finish. There's the Schema Extension. If the Schema Extension had resulted in an error then you would obviously have an error message here. In this case we'll hit OK. And the installation is pretty much on autopilot from this point forward. You get a screen that looks like this and it's just doing stuff. So, we'll fast-forward to the end when all of these products are installed. Once the installation is complete we are brought back to the ZENworks 7 Desktop Management screen and at this point the Desktop Management Services are installed on the Server we selected. And this concludes our discussion of installing the ZENworks Desktop Management Services.
