Overview & Installation of ZDM7 / Installing ZDM7 pt. 1
Subtitles of the Movie
This is ZENworks Desktop Management 7 and in this video we're going to install the ZENworks Desktop Management Server. You're looking at the console of my administrative workstation that's in my lab setup. Throughout the course of this Title this is the machine that we will do all of our administrative functions on and I have another Windows 98 workstation that will be the victim, if you will, the managed workstation so we can show the difference between the admin workstation and the managed workstation. For the purposes of our lab we will be installing ZENworks Desktop Management 7 on a Windows Server 2003 system. This is our Zen server and if we'll look at the properties of the Zen Server we'll see that it does meet the minimum requirements for the ZENworks Desktop Management Server on Windows. So now that we've seen that we will go back to our administrative workstation and mounted in my administrative workstation I have the ZENworks Desktop Management 7.0.1 CD. The Autorun on this CD is the same no matter which portion of the ZENworks Suite you would be installing. You'll see all of the components of the ZENworks 7 Suite listed over here. If you would happen to pick, say, Patch Management and then choose the option to install ZENworks Patch Management, obviously since this is the Desktop Management CD you're prompted to put in the Patch Management CD. In my opinion this is kind of counterintuitive. When you put in a given CD it should only display what's on that CD, but I digress. We will choose the Desktop Management option and we'll choose to install in English. The first item on the Novell ZENworks 7 Desktop Management Installation screen is the Schema Extension and Product Licensing. If this is the first time that you have installed ZENworks 7 Desktop Management in your eDirectory tree you will have to extend the schema. We're going to do this as a separate step just so you can see what it's like. If you did not choose the Schema Extension step when you went to install Desktop Management Services you would get a notice that Schema Extensions aren't present and do you wish to install them? The reason this is a separate option in the ZENworks Desktop Management installation is that some administrators may wish to extend the schema of their eDirectory tree well in advance of actually installing the ZENworks product. This way you give the Schema extensions time to propagate throughout your entire eDirectory tree, and should those Schema extensions break eDirectory, which is known to happen from time to time, those Schema changes can be backed out with intensive support from Novell Technical Services. In this case we'll choose Schema Extension and Product Licensing. Like all software we have a Software License Agreement, so we'll choose to accept. We now want to know the name of our tree. You can type the name of the tree if you'd like. In this case we'll hit this button and have it look for our trees. In this case there is only one tree that we're authenticated to. We'll choose that. If you merely needed to install licensing to the tree and did not wish to extend the Schema you could uncheck the option to extend the Schema. If you needed to login to this tree because you are not logged in with sufficient privileges to extend the Schema you could click the Login button here and provide administrative credentials. In this case we are logged in as the admin, so we'll hit Next. Next you are prompted for the License Code from your License Agreement with Novell. If you don't enter anything, as it says, it will only function for 90 days. This is more than sufficient for our lab purposes, so we obviously will not enter a license code here and we'll hit Next. We're then given an installation summary that tells us that we have selected VTC Tree. It tells us that the Schema will be extended, and that the licensing object will be created. So we'll click Finish, and if we've lived right our Schema Extension is successful. We can choose to view the Log File if you're really into those kinds of things, but since it was successful we'll just hit OK. We get a confirmation message that it actually did complete successfully, and we're now back to the ZENworks Desktop Management Submenu. At this point we are ready to move on to install the Desktop Management Services.
