Novell ZENworks Desktop Management 7 Tutorials

Introduction & Overview / Topics Covered

Subtitles of the Movie

This is ZENworks Desktop Management 7 and in this video we're going to go a little deeper than the Course Overview and we're going to get into some of the meat of the topics that we're going to cover in the course of this tutorial First off we'll start with Installation and Configuration. We will go over the installation prerequisites, what exactly is required to install ZENworks on all of the platforms that the ZENworks agents are supported on. We will go through and install on a Windows Server 2003, and we will set up the initially created objects in eDirectory so that the objects know where the servers are and the servers know where the objects are. You would kind of think that the installation routine would take care of this for you, but there are a few little tweaks that you have to do for proper operation. We will also set up automatic workstation import as a part of setting up the initial objects for ZDM7, and we will talk about installing the ZENworks Agent on any workstation that will be managed by your ZENworks implementation. We'll then move on to Workstation Management. We will discuss the various workstation management policies and profiles; show you how to associate a policy and a profile with a workstation depending upon the user that's logged in. We will discuss Remote Management, how you can remotely control a workstation; how you can do remote diagnostics, and save yourself and your end users some time and frustration so that you don't actually go three blocks and two floors up to go sit at their workstation just to see the problem that they're describing. We'll also move on to user policies. We'll see how user policies work hand in hand with the workstation policies. We'll start by using just the general user policies. We'll also show you how to take Group Policies like you would put in Active Directory and use them as user policies for any user or group of users on your network, and then we will discuss Dynamic Local User and all of the tricks and traps that Dynamic Local User brings to a ZENworks environment. We'll then move on to what we'll spend most of our time on, which are Application Objects. We'll show you how to create an application object that is based on an MSI Package. We will also show you how to create an application object that is based on a Legacy setup buddy XE-type install, where you don't have an MSI Package. We'll also discuss Simple Application Objects that don't actually have an install component to them, all they simply do is run an executable that's based either on the workstation or on the network, your choice. We will also discuss Web Application Objects which simply point to a website, and we'll also discuss Terminal Server Application Objects, which run applications off of a Windows terminal server or a Citrix presentation server. Once we've gone over everything we can with application objects we'll move on to Application Management. We'll discuss the options that you use to distribute an application; the options you use to run an application; we'll discuss the common options, and by common options I mean the options that are common across all of the application object types, whether they're MSI or Legacy, or Web application, et cetera. We'll also discuss Fault Tolerance and the proper way to associate applications to users or workstations. We'll then move on to Workstation Inventory. We'll discuss how to set up inventory properly. We'll discuss how to work with the data that is collected from the workstations; how it gets from the workstations to the server to the database. We'll discuss Inventory Reporting; how to run the canned reports as well as how to do some custom querying; and we'll end up at the section I call Putting it All Together, where we'll show you how all of the stuff that we've learned in concept over the course of the Tutorial actually works when you see it on the workstation. And with that, that concludes our list of topics covered in ZENworks Desktop Management 7.
