Initial Configuration / Set Up Automatic Workstation Import pt. 1
Subtitles of the Movie
This is ZENworks Desktop Management 7 and in this video we're going to discuss setting up Automatic Workstation Import. Setting up Automatic Workstation Import and removal, or AWI as it's referred to, is generally one of the first things that's done after setting up a news and works implementation. The reason for this is that so many other ZENworks functions are tied to workstation objects: workstation imaging; remote control; application management to a degree; and workstation inventory are the big ones. Because of this you want to make sure that you can start importing workstations into eDirectory right off the bat. The first thing to do when you're setting up Automatic Workstation Inventory is to check and make sure that the Automatic Workstation Import and Automatic Workstation Removal Services are running on your Desktop Management Server. On a NetWare Server you would Alt-Escape until you found the correct screen on the NetWare server. Since we're doing it on a Windows Server it's a little different although it's fairly simple. It's exactly where you'd think it'd be. You open the Services Control Panel and near the bottom you will look for the ZENworks Workstation Import and Removal Services; there they are, and they are started. They're also set to start automatically. Again, these are the default settings. It's just good to check this first before you set up any of the policies and DNS names because it'll save you a lot of heartburn when you go to troubleshoot further down the road. So now that we've verified that these services are running on our ZENworks Desktop Server we will switch to our admin workstation and we'll open up ConsoleOne and we will set up a Workstation Import Policy. Believe it or not the Workstation Import Policy is the one thing that most administrators overlook when they're setting up Workstation Import. They check to see that the Workstation Import Service is running on their Desktop Management Server. They install the ZENworks Agent, set the DNS name to point at the Workstation Inventory Server and then wonder why the Workstation Objects don't appear in eDirectory. The very simple reason is, is if you don't have an Import Policy in place the Workstation Import and Removal Server doesn't know what to do with the new Workstation Registrations and so it just denies the Registration. So, we'll right-click the organizational unit we wish to create the Policy in Ð in this case it is our top level organization Ð and we'll choose New, Policy Package. There are many different types of Policy Packages, each of which contains different policies. Obviously we will touch on most if not all of these as we go throughout the Title. For the time being we're interested in a Server Package since this is a policy that will tell a server what to do, and we're going to create a Workstation Import Policy. You don't really have to select the Policy Type over on the right. This is merely just a list of what policies can be set by this Policy Package. So, we'll hit Next. It wants to know the Policy Package Name. In this case we will just leave it as the default of Server Package, since we only have the single server. Obviously in a production environment you would want something a little more descriptive than Server Package. We will verify that this is the container we wish the Policy Package to be created in. We'll hit Next, and once this Policy Package is created we can just exit or define additional Properties, or create another one. In this case we're going to define the Properties of the Package, and we'll hit Finish. Now because this is a Server Package and you can install ZENworks for Desktops on various Server platforms, you can define one Server Package that contains the settings for all of your different server platforms. If you'll drop down this Policies Subsheet you'll see we have General, Windows, netWare, and Linux. Most of what you'll be doing is on the General tab. If, for example, you have a Workstation Import Policy that will be different for a Windows Server than it would be on a NetWare Server, you could define one set of policies on the Windows tab and one set of policies on the NetWare tab. If you have policies defined on the NetWare tab and on the General tab, the policies that are on the NetWare tab will take precedence on a NetWare Server for example. In this case, since we just have the one server we're going to say General, and we're going to define the Workstation Import Policy and we'll hit Properties.
