This is just a quick note to talk about a very important process which is Starting and Stopping the MySQL Server. This is something that you may need to do as you're administering your database but still I wanted to talk about it here since we're talking about the different things having to do with installation. So depending upon the way in which you've installed your software, the platform that you're installing it on and the way in which you set up the server to automatically launch whenever your computer starts, there are different techniques that you would use for starting and stopping the MySQL Server. So here are the different techniques for the different platforms just very quickly. On Windows, I'm assuming that you're going to be running MySQL as a Windows service and in that case then you can just use the Services Manager and turn it on and turn it off, not a problem. Or if you're on the Command Line there's also a command Net Start or Net Stop and then followed by the name of the service which I'm assuming is MySQL. At least that's what the default would've been if you followed through on the installer. On Mac OS X then you have the MySQL Preference Panes, you can just open up the Preferences click on the Preference Pane and you'll see that it has one item on it, it's a pushbutton and it says whether the server is running or not and if it's not running you click that and you start it running and if it is running you click that you can stop it, it's that easy. Otherwise there are other techniques you can use from the Command Line at that point then all of those things are delineated in the Readme file but it's a little bit more involved than what I want to get into here. But you got the Readme file so go for it. On the different Unix's, now there are going to be variations here but you're going to have to learn what the technique is for your platform and so therefore we want you to read the friendly manual, so enjoy. And in the next set of lessons, the next chapter, we're going to talk about Configuring the MySQL Server because there are still some configuration options that I want to make sure you have set before we go much further and I'm going to explain all of those over there.
