In this lesson let's go over some of the key elements you need to know about in Microsoft Word. It's important to understand the basics so when you read about Word, utilize Help options or ask questions, you're using the correct terminology. By using the right words you can find your answers much quicker and easier which means a lot less frustration for you. So let's open up Microsoft Word 2013. When I open up Word over here at the left is all of my recent documents and I can open other documents. This whole thing that starts up is called your Start Screen. So when you open up Word you have a Start Screen. I'll show you in a little bit how to take that off in case you don't like it. Over here at the right of course are all the templates that we can use. We can scroll down through and see all kinds of templates. You just double-click on them to open them up and use them. I can click on different categories up here if I need to write a letter, it will go out there for me and get all kinds and it'll also categorize those for me. Maybe I just need a letterhead, it'll take me to that specific category. I'm going to hit my Back Arrow here to get back to the Start Screen. Now if I don't like this Start Screen and I don't want it, I can turn it off. To do that I'm going to go to the backstage. So I'm going to open up just a blank document here. I'm going to click on File which takes me to the backstage and I'm going to go to Options. Right here I can uncheck, Show the Start Screen, click OK. I'll close out of Word, open it up again and it automatically just starts me up with a blank document. So that is an option if you want to remove it. The next thing I want you to look at is over here at the top right, you're always going to find your account information. I can hit my down arrow and I can go into my account settings if I want to. This gives me my information, change my photo about me, switch accounts, sign out. If I click About Me, it's actually going to go out there and I can log into my account and change that information. We're not going to do that right now. You'll notice also you can change the way your backgrounds look. If I want to change that and make it look differently I can do that, however I would like to. I'll hit the Back Button again. Right here across the top our all my tabs. You'll notice the File Tab takes me to what's called the backstage. All of these other tabs are just like we've seen before with Office. The text is a little bit better spaced and the icons so you'll be very familiar with this type of layout, the ribbon layout. The Design Tab is new, that's holding our Styles. You'll always be by default starting in the Home Tab. You'll notice each of those tabs have different little areas. I have the Paragraph area, Styles, Font. I just hit that little down arrow in that area and it brings me many, many more options. Your typical most used options are right here visible but again more advanced more elements are in that arrow. If I type something in Microsoft Word and I select it, see how that little mini toolbar pops up? It gives me quick and easy access to some common items that I would do with text. I might change a style I might make it italic et cetera. The other thing you'll notice when you do specific things within Microsoft Word, if I insert a picture, notice it's selected already for me. It brings up a brand new tab with different options. So depending upon what you've added or what you've selected that will change your tabs up at the top. So we're going to stop right here and in the next video I'm going to tell you a few more things about the key elements of Word.
