Introduction / Get Help

Subtitles of the Movie

Help is easy to find in Microsoft Word. This icon in the top corner of the screen is the Help button. As you can see when I hold my mouse over the button there's a Shortcut Keystroke that you can use to get Help, that's F1, so you can either click this icon or press F1 to open the Help Dialog. Here you can get assistance with Microsoft Word. When you first launch Help you will see that there are some Word 2010 Topics that you can read. The Search Box in the top of the Help Dialog gives you access to a range of help resources, as you can see when you click the drop-down list next door to Search. Here you can select to search content from Office.com such as All Word Content, Word Help, Word Templates, Word Training and so on. I'm going to select All Word. To find help on a specific topic, such as the Ribbon, I'll type ribbon in the search box and click Search. Here you can see that there's a lot of help information about the Ribbon. You can see the Topic, a description of what you're going to read about and the fact that it's an article that you're being referred to. An article, if I click it, will open in this dialog. I can click the Back button to go back to where I was. This is another Help item about the Ribbon but you can see it's a video. Because it's described as an article it, too, will open in this Help Dialog. Let's scroll down here just a little bit. Here's another video, but you'll see that the description for this one is Video not Article. When you see that it's a video it's going to open in a Browser Window. Here's another Help item here and you can see that it's described as a Link. Links, like Videos, will open in a Browser Window and so too will anything that's described as Training. So, while Articles open in this Help Dialog here, Links, Videos and Training will all open in a Browser Window. Inside Word you can get help on various topics. Here I have the Paragraph Dialog open and you'll see that there's a Help question mark in the top of this dialog and if I click that, I'll get access immediately to the Word Help screen. As you can see, there are some Articles here that relate to spacing. If none of these articles answers the question that I came here to solve I can type a question in the Search Box and click Search. If I move to Backstage View again the question mark icon appears and again when I click it, I'll be offered what is called Context Sensitive Help. It's help that's relevant to things that appear in the Backstage area of Word. Notice, too, that Help is an entry in Backstage View. I can select here to get to Microsoft Office Help. I can click Getting Started to go to the Web to access getting started information. Contact Us will take me to Microsoft Office Support Online. Options takes me to the Options Dialog and Check for Updates gives me access to updates for my Windows programs.
