In this video we'll discuss customizing file and folder views in the Windows Explorer window. In the Windows Explorer window, you can customize your file and folder views in the View menu, which you can access from the menu bar. Here is how you can access the View menu. Open the Windows Explorer window by clicking the Start button and then clicking Windows Explorer. The Windows Explorer window appears and displays the contents of the Documents folder. Click the Organize button in the toolbar, move the mouse pointer over Layout, and then click Menu Bar. Click View in the menu bar. The View menu offers the following controls. Toolbars: this control is used to display any additional toolbars that you have installed on your computer. You can also lock the bars so that stray clicks don't alter your layout, or fully customize the button toolbar. Status bar: if you miss the status bar at the bottom of the screen, this control enables the display of this information bar at the bottom of the window that shows object details, file size, free space, and so on. Explorer bar: this control opens the explorer bar at the bottom of the pane so that you can research a selected file on the list as well as discuss the file with others in the network. Views: this section allows quick change of the view used to display file objects, extra large icons, large icons, medium icons, small icons, list, details, and tiles. Auto Arrange: this command automatically arranges the files and folders in the list as Windows Vista sees fit. Align to Grid: this command automatically arranged the files and folders according the Windows icon grid that you setup in Control Panel. Sort By: this menu allows you to determine the sort order for files and folders; for example you could group music files by name and show the files in ascending order. Group By: this menu allows you to group files by certain criteria such as the filename. Stack By: this menu allows you to determine the stack order for a group of files. Choose Details: this command sets the details that appear in tool tips, details, and tile view. The defaults are name, size, type, and modification date. Among the thirty-three options included are attributes, owner, subject, company, and file version. Customize this Folder: this command is used to define custom attributes for the selected folder. Go To: this menu is used to navigate back, forward, up one level, to the home page, or to recently visited locations. Refresh: this command reloads the display of files and folders. Windows Vista remembers the view type you selected for each folder, but if a view type isn't specified, the default view type is tiled.
