The Windows Desktop / Starting A Program

Subtitles of the Movie

In this video we'll discuss how you can start a program in Windows Vista. You can start a program in a number of ways. If the program icon is on the desktop double click the icon to start the program. If the program icon is in the Quick Launch Bar in the toolbar, click the icon to start the program. Click the Start menu and then click All Programs. You can then select a program from the list as described in the Start menu video within this chapter. In the Start menu you can also click the documents, pictures or music links to open those directories in Windows Explorer. Windows Vista creates these three folders by default so it's easy for you to store documents, pictures and music files easily. You'll learn more about these three default folders in the Accessing Built-in Folders video later in this chapter. You can also start a program by opening a file because Vista will automatically open the program associated with a file. You can open a file in several ways. If the file is on the desktop you can double click the file. You can click the Start button and then move the mouse pointer over recent items. A list of recently opened items will appear for you choose from. You can open the documents, pictures or music folders and then double click on the file you want to open in Windows Explorer. You can also open Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder that contains the file you want to open and then double click the file to open it. You'll learn more about using Windows Explorer in Chapter 10. Note that if there isn't a program associated with a file, Vista will ask you if you want to select a program to open the file or search for a program on the web.
