The Windows Desktop / The Start Menu

Subtitles of the Movie

In this video we'll discuss the Start menu in Windows Vista. Windows 95 introduced a number of features that Windows Vista still uses today. One of those features is the Start menu. You access the Start menu by clicking the Start button at the left side of the taskbar as in past versions of Windows dating back to Windows 95. However, in Windows Vista the Start text is gone. The Start button is now a blue orb that contains the Windows logo. Click the Start button. If you've used the Start button in earlier versions of Windows you'll notice the Vista Start menu looks a bit different but much of it is the same. The left pane of the Start menu displays recently opened programs as well the link to all programs installed on the system. The bottom of the left pane includes a search box that's new in Vista. You can use this box to search for information on your computer quickly. You'll learn more about searching in the Start menu in the searching in the Start menu video later in this chapter. The right pane of the Start menu contains links to your default folders, recent items you've opened, and Vista features such as Network Settings, the Control Panel and Online Help. The bottom of the right pane contains the yellow Sleep button and the Lock button and well as the list of Log off options discussed in the Logging off video in chapter 1. When you click All Programs the list of programs appears in the left pane. This is a different arrangement from the Start menu in past versions of Windows where Pop-up menus would appear to the right of the All Programs button. In the left pane you can scroll up and down and open the program you want. If the program is in a folder double click the folder and the programs appear underneath the folder name. If you have the Start menu open you can close it by clicking anywhere else on the screen.
