The Windows Desktop / The Taskbar
Subtitles of the Movie
In this video we'll talk about the Windows Vista taskbar. Windows 95 introduced the taskbar, a location at the bottom of the screen that shows currently open applications and provides quick access to programs and services that you use most often. The parts of the taskbar from left to right are: the Start button, which is a blue button with the Windows logo; the Quick Launch bar, which contains programs and services you access regularly. For example, one default button in the Quick Launch bar is the Show the Desktop button which minimizes all open windows and shows the desktop; Open Applications, which are represented by buttons that contain the file name; the Notification area, which contains shortcuts to programs; status information such as if you connected to a network and the clock. If you use the move the mouse pointer over an icon in the Notification area, a Pop-up box appears for several seconds that shows the status of that icon. For example, when I move the mouse pointer over the Battery logo, a Pop-up box appears that tells me that my laptop battery is fully charged. Also, if something has changed regarding the status of a program or service in the Notification area, a Pop-up balloon that points to the icon in question alerts you about the issue that needs your attention. You will learn more about changing the taskbar and the Start menu to fit your needs in the Customize the taskbar and start menu video in Chapter 3.
