Personalizing Windows / Adjust the Display Settings

Subtitles of the Movie

In this video we'll discuss adjusting the display settings. When you install Windows Vista for the first time Vista recognizes the display card and monitor your using and changes settings accordingly so you can get the most out of your display. However, if you need to adjust your display settings so more or fewer items fit on the screen you can do this easily from the Personalization window. Here's how. Open the Personalization window as you did in the Access the Personalization Window video earlier in this chapter. Click the Display Settings link. The Display Settings window appears. There are two rectangles in the window with the numbers one and two; and the rectangle with the number one is highlighted. This rectangle represents your currently selected monitor and screen resolution in relation to monitor two. If you aren't certain about the monitor your using click the Identify Monitors button. The monitor number appears on your desktop for a few seconds. The selected monitors graphics adaptor appears below the monitor graphic. I'm using an NVIDIA GeForce Go 7800 GTX graphics adapter. If you want to see more information about the graphics adapter, click the Advanced Settings button to open the graphic card window. In the resolution slider bar you can see the resolution applied to that monitor. In this case, it's 800 x 600 pixels. The slider bar is at the far left which indicates that the resolution setting is at its lowest position. You can drag the slider bar to the right to get higher resolution. You can also click the Colors button to select the number of colors you want to display. In the case of my NVIDIA card, the default is highest 32 bit. If I click the Highest button I can choose from highest or medium. If your not sure how to get the best display click the, How do I get the best display link, to open the Windows Help and Support window and read information about getting the best display on your monitor. Apply the changes you made by clicking the Apply button. The screen resolution will change and a dialog box will appear and give you 15 seconds to confirm that you want to change to the new resolution. If you don't confirm the change in 15 seconds, Vista resorts to the previous resolution. For now click the Cancel button.
