In this video we'll talk about changing the appearance of mouse pointers in Windows Vista. The mouse pointer in Windows Vista is a white arrow by default; however, if you want a mouse pointer to reflect your personal style you can change the mouse pointer appearance not only when you move the mouse around but the appearance of the pointer when you do other mouse related tasks like clicking on an icon. Here's how you change the mouse pointer appearance. Open the Personalization window as you did in the Access the Personalization Window video earlier in this chapter. Click the Mouse Pointers link. The Mouse Properties window appears and displays the pointers tab. The mouse pointer appearance is tied to the default system scheme. Since I have Windows Aero installed on my computer, my mouse scheme is part of the Aero scheme. Click the scheme to see a list of other mouse schemes. I've selected 3D bronze. And after you select the new mouse scheme the mouse pointer appears in the preview section and the mouse pointer appearance for all the other pointer states such as when the system is busy, appears in the customize list. You can customize a mouse pointer state appearance by double clicking the state to open the Browse window. I've double clicked the busy state. The Browse window opens the Cursors directory so you can select a new icon. If you don't see the icon you can browse to another directory on your computer to select the icon from that directory. For now, click the Cancel button. The Customize list still highlights the busy state I selected and the animated preview of that state appears in the preview section. If you make changes to a mouse pointer state you can save the entire pointer scheme as a new scheme by clicking on the Save As button and then typing the new scheme name in the Save Scheme dialog box. For now, click the Cancel button to return to the Personalization window.
