In this video you will learn how to change the sounds Windows Vista makes to alert you to certain conditions. By default Windows Vista plays certain sounds to give you an audio reminder that something has happened or that an event needs your attention. For example, one sound tells you that you have new mail in your E-mail box and another tells you that a dialog box is open and needs your attention. Here's how you can view and change sounds. Open the Personalization window as you did in the Access the Personalization Window video earlier in this chapter. Click the Sounds link. The Sound window appears and displays the Sounds tab by default. The sound scheme is Window's default. If you don't want any sounds, click the Window's default button and select No Sounds from the list. The Program list contains all Windows events that can have sounds associated with them. Those events that already have sounds associated with them have a speaker icon to the left of the event name. Click on an event with a sound associated with it. The associated sound file in W.A.V. or wav appears at the bottom of the window. In this example I've selected the asterisks event and the Windows error sound appears. You can hear the sound by clicking the Test button. You can select a new sound by clicking the Windows Error button and then selecting a new sound from the list. If you don't see the sound you want to use click the Browse button and you can browse for the sound file on your computer. If you change your sounds you can save your new sounds as a sound scheme by clicking the Save As button and then typing your new scheme name in the Save Scheme As dialogue box. For now, click the Cancel button to return to the Personalization window.
