In this video you will choose and set the Windows Vista screen saver. If you know you're going to be away from your computer and you want people to know that your computer is running but it's currently unavailable for use, you can activate a screen saver. A screen saver is a picture or animation that covers your screen and appears after your computer is idle for a period of time. And Windows Vista lets you set the idle time before Vista activates the screen saver. You can stop the screensaver by clicking a mouse button or any key on your keyboard. Here's how you set the screen saver. Open the Personalization window as you did in the Access the Personalization Window video earlier in this chapter. Click the Screen Saver link. The Screen Saver Settings window appears. The default screen saver is Windows Logo. The Preview screen shows you how the screen saver pictures and animation will appear on your screen. If you want to view the preview in a full screen, click the Preview button. You can stop the preview by pressing any key on your keyboard. Change the screen saver by clicking the Screen Saver button. You can choose from eight other screen savers or you can have no screen saver. When you select a new screen saver the preview screen displays the new screen saver pictures and or animations. Change the screen saver settings by clicking the Settings button. If there are no settings associated with the screen saver then a dialog box will appear stating there are no setting for that screen saver. However, some screen savers have settings, for example, if you select the photo screensaver and then click the Settings button, the Photo Screen Saver settings window appears and shows the current settings for the photo screensaver that you can change. For now, click the Cancel button. The default idle time before Vista starts the screensaver is 10 minutes but you can change that time by typing the number of minutes or moving the number of minutes up and down using the arrow buttons. If you don't want people playing around with your computer while it's idle select the On Resume Display Login screen checkbox. After you select this checkbox and apply the new screen saver settings, the Vista Logon screen will appear after the user stops the screen saver. Apply the settings by clicking the Apply button or the OK button. For now, click the Cancel button to return to the Personalization window.
