Introduction / Logging Off

Subtitles of the Movie

In this video we'll discuss options for logging out of Windows Vista. If you want to log off Windows Vista you have a number of options available. Some Log Off options keep what you have in memory and others will shut down the system entirely. Note that to log off gracefully you should close all open programs in the taskbar and you'll learn more about closing open programs in Chapter 2. Click the Start button and then move the mouse pointer over the right arrow button to the right of the Lock button. A pop up menu appears with your Log Off options. If you want to switch to another user click Switch User. The Logon screen appears so you can select the user account. If you want to log off and bring up the Login screen again click Log off. The system shuts down and closes all open programs and then takes you back to the Logon screen. You can lock the system by selecting Lock. When you lock the system the Login screen appears and you must log back on using the password. If you don't have a password then all you have to do is click your username and the desktop appears again. Restart the computer by clicking Restart. Windows Vista closes all open programs, closes the desktop and then the computer restarts. Click Sleep to put the computer is a suspended state. When you let the computer know you want it to wake up such as pressing the mouse button, a key on the keyboard or the Power button, Windows Vista quickly come right back to where you were working before you suspended the computer. Click Hibernate to put the computer in hibernation. Like sleep mode hibernation lets you pause your work and resume later without shutting down and reopening all your applications and files. However, hibernate records the current state of the computer to your hard drive. So if your power goes out or laptop batteries fail the next time you turn on the computer Windows remembers the hibernated state and returns you to it. Turn the computer off by clicking Shut Down. Windows Vista closes all open programs, closes the desktop and then the computer turns off. Note that you can access sleep and lock mode quickly by clicking the yellow Sleep button or the Lock button respectively at the bottom of the Start menu.
