In this video we'll discuss some of the new security features in Windows Vista. There are many new security features included with Windows Vista. Some are behind the scenes but others are front and center. Here are the features in the front and center category: User Account Control, which is a security feature designed to give standard users on the system the ability to use certain Vista programs and services with a password. If you are an administrator then you will not have to add a password, only confirm that you want to allow the action to take place. Even so, this is another step you have to take to reprogram a service and it can become annoying very quickly especially if you're the only person using the computer. Windows Firewall with Advanced Security: Microsoft introduced the Windows Firewall with Windows XP, and Windows Vista includes significant improvements including outbound packet filtering to cut down on spyware and viruses, and a new management console, Windows Defender which is Microsoft's anti-spyware program that prior to Windows Vista was available as a downloadable program from Microsoft's website. In Windows Vista Defender is integrated into the operating system and is integrated with Internet Explorer 7 and Windows Mail programs to cut down on spyware being downloaded to your computer. Internet Explorer includes a Phishing Filter which alerts you to sites that maybe trying to obtain your personal information fraudulently. Parental controls allow you to control how long a user is online as well as programs, services and websites the user can access. You'll learn more about configuring and monitoring these and other security features in Chapter 7.
