Introduction / New in Windows Vista
Subtitles of the Movie
In this video we'll discuss what's new in Windows Vista apart from past versions. If you've used previous versions of Windows you'll notice the interface is similar but has a new visual style. This style is called Arrow, which includes transparencies, animations and other eye candy. I'm using Aero in this tutorial and I'll discuss Aero requirements in the overview of Windows Vista video later in this chapter. Organization and navigation have changed for example; Windows Explorer now includes an address bar with a breadcrumb navigation system. This system contains links in the address bar that let you go back to the previous page. There are also search boxes in each window within Windows Explorer as well as in the Start menu. You will learn more about breadcrumb navigation in Chapter 3 and searching in Chapter 11. The Start menu itself no longer says Start as it has since Windows 95. Instead the Start button in just a round button with the Windows logo. When you open the Start menu you don't see expanding boxes any longer when you navigate through all programs. You'll learn more about the Start menu in Chapter 2. The sidebar is a transparent panel attached to one side of the screen. The side bar contains gadgets which are small programs designed for a specific purpose such as to tell the time and to get the latest weather information. There are also a number of new and improved programs including; Windows Mail, which replaces Outlook Express, Windows Media Player 11, Windows DVD Maker, Windows Photo Gallery, Windows Calendar, Windows Meeting Space which replaces NetMeeting, Windows Media Center which is a home entertainment hub that is bundled in the Home Premium and Ultimate Editions, Parental Controls which you'll learn about in Chapter 7. Windows Update is now incorporated into Windows Vista instead of as a web application as with Windows XP. And Windows now comes bundled with Internet Explorer 7 and you'll learn about this new version of Internet Explorer in Chapter 14. This is just a partial list of what you'll find in Windows Vista but you can learn more about new features in the Welcome Center, which you'll learn about in the Welcome Center video later in this chapter.
