Windows Server 2008 Basics / First Look at Server 2008
Subtitles of the Movie
Now let's get our first look at Windows Server 2008, as you can tell here, I've booted the server up, we'll talk about installation a little later, and so it's asking me to Control, Alt, Delete to log on, so I'll do that, so I'll Control, Alt, Delete and notice it gives me a log on screen, now notice, I have already created a domain, and we'll go through that a little bit later on, see how to do that. But I will put in Administrator ID and my password and we will click okay and you'll notice on the buttons here it has kind of that Vista, that arrow look and you'll see a very Vista-ey looking interface here. Now there's the Desktop of Windows Server 2008, that's the standard Desktop image that comes with it, or I can go to a standard color and they offer those to me. But notice what happens, the first thing that comes up is the initial configuration tasks. And notice that I can do things, I'm going to kill this notification, I can set the Time Zone, I can Configure Networking, Computer Name and so forth, enabling automatic update and feedback, get updates and so forth, and I can come down and customize the Server Add Roles, Features, Enable Remote Desktop and so forth, we'll look at those later. Notice down here, that this is reminding me that Terminal Services is licensing, it's not being configured. If I click this, this will not show up at log on, and I'll have to explicitly ask for it, I'm going to take that off there right now because we'll come back to it. And I can close this. Now the next thing that it's going to do is open up the Server Manager, now this thing is getting a lot of attention because all of our administrative tasks appear in this one tool, this is a Microsoft Management Console but I want to kind of compress all these and let you see what's going on, notice we have a server summary that I can open and I can see my computer information, I can Change Properties, View Network Connections, Configure Remote Desktop. For example, if I want to do my network connections, click this, and it will open that panel for me and I can start to do all kinds of things here, okay? And I can close this and go back. And if I scroll down, I can get all kind of help on security information. Notice that the Roles in this Terminal Servicing thing keeps reminding me. It says that there are 16 Roles available, I have 3 installed right now, and I've got an informational in Active Directory, going to take a look at that later on. But Server Manager is actually really cool, notice on the left side over here, we're going to look at this in a little more detail later, I can see my Roles, and for example, Access Directory domain services, I can then extend that and notice this looks very much like it did it the previous versions, it's just a lot easier to get to, notice network diagnostics, I can get into that, configuration and storage and so forth. So that's the server manager pops up now, I'm going to close that, I turned these icons on for the Desktop because I like to have them here. But let me click on the start button and show you, Server Manager and Command Prompt are here automatically, and then for administrative tools very similar to before, these pop out and I can start to look at my various tools out here if I would like them. Similar to previous versions, again, kind of very Vista like, this button will close all programs, shut down Windows and power off the computer. This button will lock the computer, and here, I can choose to switch users, log off, restart, or shut down. Notice if I right click on the Start menu, I can go to properties and I can change to a classic menu, you know, I can check my privacy on whether or not I store and display recently opened files, and a lot of this is very similar to before. So one thing you're going to notice is that a lot of the very same functionalities are here, and a lot of them are in the same place, but in some cases they just have a slicker look or better organization. Notice control Panel, I can show it on the Desktop as an icon, and jump right into Control Panel. And that's a great little shortcut for administrators, very easy way to get to things. So that's kind of a brief first glance at Windows Server 2008, you're really going to like this thing. Really cool to move around, very easy to do things.
