Installation & Deployment / Microsoft Solutions Framework

Subtitles of the Movie

Now, there is one thing that I want to point out to you that would really come in handy, especially for those of you who haven't had any experience in a large corporate computing environment and that is the Microsoft Solutions Framework. Now, this might look to you when you look at it like ah, this is a bunch of busy work. It's a Project Management kind of stuff and nobody wants to really do that a whole lot. When you get in a large environment, you really need to take care of this stuff. You need to understand that the Microsoft Solutions Framework comes directly from Microsoft's Consulting Group. So these are best practices that these people have figured out, determined, come to conclusions on as a result of real-world experiences of working in large, heterogeneous environments, OK? Now, what you're going to see when you look at the Solutions Framework on Microsoft's Site is a lot of very general guidelines, but some of the case studies that you will find out there have to do with Windows Operating System Deployments and there is a ton of really good information. For example, a Microsoft Solution Framework provides organizational Framework of principles, models, guidelines, how to deal with a team, how to deal with responsibilities and so forth, recommended practices on how to organize and pull all this stuff off, how to deal with your people, informational resources on where to get tons of information to read. Make sure you get your hands around this whole thing and then planning guides. Actually step-by-step planning guides are carrying this out. They will also direct you to software tools required for the implementations that they suggest and again, what you're looking at here are documents created by this consulting team in large environments, OK? So be very sensitive when you read this. This is not for little one or two-person, you know, small company, but for those of you who are trying to jump up to speed and try to land those jobs out there in large, corporate environments. You need to read this stuff. Being able to understand this stuff and jump into this environment would help you tremendously because in a large corporate environment, you may have four or five levels of administrators. I've worked in those environments where as an administrator I could do certain things, but parts of the program weren't open to me. I had to have people skills. I had to have the knowledge to not break something else when I did something. I had to constantly work in the context of the team and make sure that I wasn't doing anything on an island that would create hassles and problems for somebody else and that's what the Solutions Framework is all about; bringing all those resources together to have a successful, cost-effective rollout for whatever you're doing. Notice the web site link here. It's Microsoft.com slash TechNet slash SolutionAccelerators slash MSFDefault.MSPX. You can also just go to Microsoft.com, do a search for Solutions Framework or Microsoft Solutions Framework. Again, my suggestion, this is really not intricate to Windows Server 2008, but most businesses that are employing or deploying Windows Server 2008 are going to be large businesses and this is great real-world reading and understanding of some of what these environments are like for you, OK? So this is kind of an aside from the course but I wanted to throw it in and let you know that this kind of stuff's out there. It's really, really good reading for you to let you see kind of what you're stepping into in large corporate environments and how to go about rolling out these operating system in that world.
