Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Tutorials

Course Overview / Prerequisites

Subtitles of the Movie

To get the most out of this course there are some prerequiSites that you kind of need to bring in here and then I'm going to give you some setup advice so that you can follow along with me. First of all, it's really going to help you if you just have basic familiarity and by that I mean you've seen it a couple of times, had your hands on it a couple of times, Windows Server 2003 and even the prior version of that Windows Server 2000. So if you've just kind of seen these or had your hands on them it's going to help quite a bit. Now you also need to be familiar with Active Directory, if you don't know what Active Directory is you will probably be okay in the course, we're going to start kind of basic but I would go ahead and advise you to get out there and start reading some on Active Directory, you can go to Microsoft's web site and read about it, there's some excellent books out in your local book store about it. Group Policy, we'll take a brief look at management of the network and how to use Group Policy to do that and then basic Network Services and by that I'm talking about DNS, DHCP, those sorts of things. We'll just touch on those and we'll look at the tools but this is not a course on DHCP or DNS so we won't go into a whole lot of detail on those. So if you're not familiar with them, you might kind of wonder what I'm talking about and what's the big deal so you might want to read up on some of those. And then we're going to take a good look at TCP/IP because for the first time, we have IP version 6 capabilities in the Windows server product and so we'll talk about the differences between IP version 4 and 6 and so you'll need a little bit of understanding, basic understanding of what TCP/IP is. Again, I'll help you with it as much as I can but I don't want to lose you. Now, this is real important. Let's talk about setup. How can you set this up on your own computer and run it now it's a Windows server operating system so you do not want to install it on your Windows XP box because it will take over and it will cause you some hassles and some problems. Also, it's a rather expensive system so what I'm going to suggest you do is that you go download Microsoft's Virtual PC product, now the current version is Virtual PC 2007, now how do you get it? Go to Microsoft.com and just search for Virtual PC. This is a free download, you'll be able to download that and just install in on your machine. Now, once you've got that in place, you will be able to download an evaluation copy of Windows Server 2008 from Microsoft's web site or you can download what's called a virtual hard disc file or an image file if you will. Make sure it says vhd or a .vhd extension. Now Microsoft has a free vhd file up there. It is Windows Server 2008 Beta 3 version, it's out there on their web site, you can look it up and download it and play with it, it's 95 percent the same that you're going to see in this course. Another way to get an evaluation copy of this, it's a great idea, is to go to your local bookstore and buy one of the Microsoft press books or there's a number of third party books that will actually have an eval copy of Windows Server 2008 in the back of the book and I think it gives you 90 to 120 days to use the software. But what you're going to do is you're going to load the software into a window on your PC so if you're running XP or something like that or Vista you can actually install this Windows Server 2008 into this virtual environment and it will not harm your computer. You can use it full screen, you can do some really cool stuff so if you've never seen Virtual PC you need to take a look at this and run it, okay? Now again, I can't give you support on Virtual PC and all this so there's a lot of help files in Virtual PC, there's a lot of information on Microsoft's Site, go out and google it, you will, it will tell you how to install the server into the Virtual PC, you'll really like that. One warning here, you need to have at least a gig, probably a gig and a half or two gigs of RAM on your machine. This is the way to load things up. This is very similar to VMware if you had VMware it will do the same thing so that's the course prerequiSites, as long as you're square on those we should be cool and in the setup, this will help you get this thing set up on your machine and you can go through these exercises and work on some of this stuff just the same way I do in the course.
