Managing Users And Computers / Creating /Saving Queries in Active Directory
Subtitles of the Movie
In the previous example we just found a user Sussan Brown and that is something that we are likely to have to do, just to be able find a user from time to time in our active directory. But active directory provides much more powerful tools than just finding a user by their first name. We can set up queries that other applications can use to query the active directory. So we can set up a query, save the query and even export it to other applications and later in the training we will talk about exporting the queries, but for now let us take a look at how we would create a query in active directory. So we are going to, go to back to active directory users in computers and we are going to focus on the domain, and if we want to focus on the domain we can change this in the query, but for now we are just going to click on the domain, and then right click on saved queries, then down to new and query. This allows us to begin to create a new query, and what should we call this query dis with 'J' and what is going to be is disable account that start with letter J. Just for an example and you can imagine all the possibilities that you could have for this type of tool. So what we going to do is that we are going to include the sub containers because we are at the domain level, **** with at the domain. So we are going to have to include all the sub containers just to make sure that we get all the OUs. We are going to define a query. We have to find the query as the name starts with 'J' and then the fact that the account is disabled. And we could define a query as the day since the log on as you can see we can define the query with many different options, and we can do this query with users, computers and groups. Right now we are focusing on users. The users start with 'J' and the account is disabled and click on ok. And the system says ok well this is what I am going to create. I am going to create this query and I am going to create the database in this way. So it defines the query strength used to be we would have to determine what the grid was looking for and you would have to look at the query strength yourself. But this tool defines query's strength force. Just click on ok and talk more about how we export queries in later training. But as you can see being able to create queries is a powerful tool in Windows Server 2003. We need to be able to manage our user accounts and part of managing our user accounts is to be able to reset them when changes happen or things go wrong. So in our next section we will discuss resetting user in computer accounts.
