One of the best things about the active directory is the ability to control users in a granular fashion and the way we set that up is that we put the users into Organizational Units, in which they will be controlled. Then we put them into Organizational Units and then we delegate control over those organizational units. But if we are managing the entire active directory and we are not sure where a particular user is located we have other tools to help us find that user. So let us take a look as how we would find a user in our domain, if we had no idea what organizational unit to start looking at. What we are going to do is click on start and then to administrator tools and active directory users and computers. And we are going to focus on the domains, so we will go and click on the domain. Then we are going to right click and click on find and then we can type in the name of the user notice that we are in the find category is that is on top of the dialogue box. We have selected the users, contacts and groups. We could also select computer, printer shared folders, organizational units we will take a look at these later on. Now we are going to focus on finding Susan Brown. So if we type in a little bit of Susan's name we would type in Susan for example and then click on find now we will find all the Susans. And there is one Susan Brown so in this case we find Susan Brown right away. If we had Susan Brown and Susan Jackson we might want to type in Susan B to narrow it down. Depends on how large the organization is ** how much we will have to type in. But the best thing about the find users and active directory the best thing about this tool is that, we are not just finding a pointer to that object or we not just finding out where that user is located, what we are actually doing is finding that object. What I mean by that is, if we were to right click on Susan Brown now and go to properties we are in Susan Brown's properties. So we did not just find out where Susan Brown is, we actually found Susan Brown. We can do this with any user regardless of the organizational unit where they reside. So, we will look at this tool more and more during the training because we can find just about anything in the active directory as long as the properties are listed for that item. We can also save our queries. If we have done a query and we have gone through many steps to create that query and we want to save that information then we can save that query in active directory. This is something that is new to Windows Server 2003 that was not available in Windows 2000. So in our next section we will take a look at how we save the query. That is Next.
