We will be undergoing scheduled maintenance on May 20th, 2013 at 02:00 GMT.
When we talk about enabling or unlocking accounts you might be thinking well how they get disabled or locked in the first place. Well, one scenario might be that we just created the account either user account or computer account we are not going to use it right away. In that case we should disable the account when it is created. In other case say user goes on vacation for two months. We might want to disable that user's account. To disable a user account and to enable a user account a pretty much the same operations, which is right click on the account and then select what we want. Same thing for computer accounts. When we lock an account we do not actually lock the account, the user locks themselves out. A locked account means that the user has improperly entered their username or password and they have done it enough times, so that the security policy of the system has locked the computer out and in that case we have to unlock the account. Lets go into the Graphical User Interface into the GUI and in particular into active directory users and computers and, let us take a look at where we enable and disable user and computer accounts and where the unlock accounts when they become locked out. I am going to active directory users and computers, say for example I want to disable Sam Stone's .account .right now. Right click on the Sam Stones, click on disable account and Sam is disabled. So Sam is going on vacation for two months now his account is disabled and it cannot be used by someone else, cannot be spoofed by someone else. But on the same token, if we want to create a new user in management right click on management, come down to new and over to user and say we want this one to be Davis Smith. So DSmith, I will click on next and then David Smith is not coming on board just yet. So we do not want that account open. Even if they asked to change his password later on we want to create this account disable it at the time when we create it. So click on next, and then the wizard says ok you are creating this account and you are disabling it and finish. So now we have created David Smith but as you can see David is disabled so to enable either one of these accounts we right click and, then click on enabling account and the objects that we selected, objects that we were on when we enabled the account is what gets enabled. So you can see both of them at the same time. If you wanted to enable just one account just go ahead disable both the accounts so, we will hold the control key, select both, right click and disable both the account, click on ok now by just want to enable Sam Stone, click on the Sam Stone right click then enable account and click on ok. So it is as simple as that. As far as unlocking an account, if an account gets locked out because of putting in the wrong username and password, and what will happen is if we right click on the account, go down to properties then into the account tab, and then scroll down, we will see that the account is disabled, check mark reject and thin we can simply clear that cheek box,in which you can see that there are many different options as we scroll down. If we clear the checkbox account disabled then you can let that person back into the system. It is as simple as that. We can enable and disable accounts and unlock account by using tools provided by active directory users and computers. When we hire a new individual and that individual is going to be doing the same things as other individuals. So in other words we have sales department who hire new sales persons. If the person is going to need exactly the same resources as others, then there is no point in having to reinvent the wheel every time so we can use templates so that when we hire a sales person we simply use templates. It is a special type of account which is disabled and then copied and we will take a look at using user account templates in our next session.
