Software update services is a service that is provided by Microsoft and items can be downloaded from the Microsoft website, and they keep it up-to-date with latest security fixes, critical updates, critical drivers, fixes for known vulnerabilities and these files are good for Windows 2000, Windows xp and for Windows Server 2003 computers. So what do we need to do in order to get these software update services? First of all we have the right hardware and software requirements on our server. The hardware requirements for the server are going to be SUS server, the software update services server. It should be Pentium III, 700 MHz of higher server with 512 MB RAM and a 6 GB hard disk space those are the hardware requirements. There are also software requirements. The software requirements are, it must be a Windows Server 2003 computer or a Windows 2000 server with service pack 2 or higher. So it does work with Windows 2000 server which has service pack 2 or higher. Another software requirement is IIS 5.0 or higher. So in Windows 2000 server with service pack 2 and IIS 5 will work. Another software requirement is Internet Explorer 6.0 or later and then software update services must be installed on an NTFS partition. So these are the server requirements. Now if we have these requirements to install software update services we need to do is go to Microsoft's website. It is www.Microsoft.com/windows/windowsupdates/sus/default.asp and then on that site we can download the sus101sp1.exe file. That's the current file for software update services. Once we download that file that's an executable file we can execute that file and that begin the installation of software update services on our server. As far as clients are concerned in order for the clients to be able to use the software update services they have to have the requirements of the client. Now requirements of the clients and again in this case the client could be the another server that is receiving its services from software update server. So the requirements of the clients is it is automatic in Windows Server 2003 if it's a Windows 2000 professional machine or Windows xp with the latest service pack installed. Either one of those the latest service pack installed on these clients will allow receiving the software update services update. And administrators can review and test and approve all of the updates before they actually published for installation to the clients. So the clients don't automatically get everything just because it came to the server. The clients get what the administrator decides to give to the clients. So the clients have the software ****** anything. Then we will talk about how we roll out that software and then how we set the group policies so that the clients are set for its automatic updates. But the clients won't automatically get everything because the administrator is in charge of viewing and testing and approving the updates before publishing the installation of the clients. So where is the tool that we use to make all of this happen? Well, we will take a look at that in our next session.
