There are two main types of group policy configuration. The two main types are computer and user configuration. Computer configuration applies to the computer regardless of the user that is on the computer and computer configuration can be enforced across all of the computers in the organization by applying it on the domain level or it can be done in a very granular fashion by applying it to OUs. User configuration applies to the user who logs on to the computers and it also can be enforced for all users in an organization or it can be applied granularly using OUs in which the users are contained. So let us take a look at the group policy management console and see where it would go in order to store configuring a policy. So let us pick our policy and for example our test policy and we will right click on the test policy and then click on to get it. This takes us into the group policy object editor and you remember we were here before and we right click on properties and then we can take a look at the properties for the group policy itself. All we have to do is now click on cancel and we are going to take a look at the computer configuration settings and the user configuration settings. In the computer configuration settings there are software settings so that we can install a software program for all of the computers in a given container, where the policy is applied. There are windows settings such as scripts and security settings. We will come back and talk about each of these later on and then there are administrative templates. Administrative templates for computer configuration actually change the registry on the computer local registry. In particularly change the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE settings in the registry and there are many many components in regards to this. Windows components, we have got network components, we have got printers, we have got many different components that we can configure and each of these settings is like a switch. So for example if we want to allow printers to be published or not allow printers to be published we can right click on the switch look in properties inside well do you want to this to be not configured to be enabled or to be disabled. Those were the three settings in these switches for these group policies like a three position switch. Let is closer computer configuration and take a look at user configuration. It is very much the same, we have got software settings but these software settings would be applied to users when they log on to the computer. We will talk more about how software settings are applied in later Windows Server 2003 training but this is where we applied software settings. We want it to apply a new package and right click the new and then the package and then find the package that we want to apply. We have got windows settings and the windows settings are different. Then those for computer configuration as you would expect them to be you get scripts, you get folder redirection, talk more about folder redirection later on and we also then have the administrative templates for user configuration. Administrative templates for user configuration also change the registry but they change HKEY_CURRENT_USER keys of the registries. So they change the settings on the local machine by applying the group policy through the network. So as you can see there are a tremendous number of settings in the group policy. What are we going to do now is we are going to focus on those that are most necessary to know for the 70-290 test. And as you go through the Server 2003 training and you are going to learn more and more about group policy central to the understanding of active directory. For now we are going to focus on what is most important to know for 70-290 and the next thing that we are going to talk about is assigning scripts for GPOs. That is next.
