As we mentioned before a digital signature on a file such as a driver tells us 2 things. Number 1 that file has been tested on the operating system and for the components that we are going to use it for so it should work. Number 2, it tells us that since that test that file has not been changed or tampered with in anywhere because if the file has been changed then the digital signature will not verify. So we can use the file signature verification tool to determine whether our drivers are infact digitally signed or not. So let us take a look at how we use the file signature verification tool. We are going to click on start then run then we are going to type in SIGVERIF (sigverif) press enter. Now file signature verification tool can identify all type of files because there are a lot of files in the operating system itself that are signed. So we want to do is focus in on the driver files for this example. So we are going to click on advanced remember we are going to say, we want to look for certain types of files. So we want to look for files that are not signed you want to scan for these types of files, drive and we want look in the folder c:\windows as well as all of its sub folders. So we are going to look from the root down then we will click on ok, and then click on START. System builds the file list and begins scanning the files. Comes back and says ok I scanned your files and I verified what is digitally signed. Click on ok, click on advanced, want to look at the log now and then view log. We can see our signed driver files. In this way we can determine whether what we think is real is real. In other words are there some files in there some drivers in there that are not signed. That we think are signed that may be they are giving us the problem. So it is important to know how to use these tools both for real life as well as for the test, because drivers are the software that allow the hardware to communicate with the operating system. And there are certain things we should do in regards to drivers and other things that we definitely should not do, and that all goes into best practice. So in our next section we will discuss best practices with the drivers. That is next.
