Before we had disk coders if we wanted to limit the amount of space that user could have on a certain drive then we had to do was to give them their own partition on that drive and that way they could use entire partition for whatever they wanted to store. Then if we wanted to make changes we had to actually change around partitions just because we had users with different needs. With disk coders we have a way to manage our disk space that is much simpler because with each partition or volume we can decide how much space going to be allowed to average user to use and then we can even assign additional space or less space for certain users. So we can have average user settings and then we can the specific user settings. If there are any specific user settings they will override anything for the average user. We can also have the system automatically warn us when a person gets to certain level of disk space. and These warnings can come up and are system file we can view with event viewer. So we can manage our disks by using the disk coder tool and therefore we can use our disk space much more efficiently than we could before, we were able to use disk coders. It should be mentioned that all of these things that we have talked about compression, encryption and disk coders require that the partition that we are working with, partition or volume we format with NTFS, otherwise we don't have these options. So let us take a look at disk coders what we are going to do is we are going to go to My Computer and we can right click on any disk. So just going to right click on this boot C and click on properties, we will see the properties on the disk and we notice that one of the tabs is the coder tab so click on coder Now, this tab wouldn't show up if a user were to right click on this disk they wouldn't coder tab because they are not allowed to make any changes to it. If we click on enable coder management we can see that we have the option to set the default coder limit for new users on this volume. That is what we talked about as the average person. So for most people what I am going to do is 8 i am going to limit their disk space to a certain amount and then we can put into number and then put into unit so if we wanted to limit everybody to 2 GB worth of storage limit their disk space 2 GB limit their disk space to 2 MB of storage limit their disk space to 2 MB, set the warning to 2 MB. Now if we wanted to log an event when the user exceeds their border limit it then shows up in the logs then we can set that. We need to log that when user exceeds the level we can check that. So as you see we check both of those boxes. At this point we haven't denied the user actually using any more space than 2 MB. Well, we can do that as well. So we decide we are going to deny space users exceeding the coder limit then we can do that as well. So when a user comes up to 2 MB worth of space then what will happen is the user will get an error that says they don't have any disk space. Even though there is more physical room on the volume or on the partition that they are using, they the will get a warning that says, they don't have any more to store data that they own. The files and folder they created they actually own. But if you see a picture like this on the test it says you which of the following are going to happen? The user will be denied diskspace after 2 MB that events will be logged and it has all these different options you looked down here you can see all these things checked. But if you see something like this on the test I am not saying that you will if is just something that they could do that's tricky, notice that the light is still red we haven't really done anything yet. We haven't applied anything yet. Watch what happens when we click on apply, system says you should enable the coder system only if you intend to use the coders on this desk. I say, ok, I know what I am doing. The light turns to yellow which means that now it is doing it and then it turns to green and the status is disk coders system is active. Now all of these settings will actually applied with the light being red none of them were actually applied. So understand that the disk coders can only be used if you are using NTFS and with disk coders we can choose the amount of disk space for our average user. We can also choose the amount of the disk space for certain users. We click on the coder entries now we see that we have got our domain admins in here that are allowed to use 3 Kb because they already had their settings and their warning or their amount of use is 3 Kb. So we allowed to use 1 Mb but if we wanted to change just their particular settings we can right click and click on properties and then just for the domain admins we could change them to 1 GB. So everybody else is still 1 MB domain admins is at 1 GB. Who ever we want to add in we click on coder and new coder entry and then type in who ever want to add in. If we want to add in Al Crosskey for example A Crosskey and limit his disk space too and whatever we want to limit his disk space to. Then we click on ok when we have these specifics. These specifics will override the default. So it is important to know how to manage the disk coders because that is part of day to day management. But being effective network administrator we also need to be protecting for what could go wrong so in our next chapter we will discuss managing disaster recovery.
