Administration / Creating User Accounts

Subtitles of the Movie

We create user accounts for 2 reasons; number 1 to allow users to log on to local machine or to a domain in order to gain access to resources on that machine or on that domain. And number 2 to be able to audit that user. So each user account must be unique. So that when a person is logged on and we audit, what they are accessing we can have reasonable assurance that we know who the user is. And it is important that we know the user accounts that are created on our machines and in our domains. Now we use active directory users and computers to create user accounts and the process is fairly simple. First take a look at active directory users and computers and how we will use to create user accounts. So we are going to click on start, then to administrative tools and then active directory users and computers. This brings up the Active Directory Users and Computers' Microsoft Management Console. And what we are going to do is create a new user within the management OU. You can see we already have some users in the management OU. What we are going to do is create a new user named Bill Black. So we are going to right click on management OU and then select new then user and then type in the first name Bill and last name Black. We are going to give him a user logon name of BBlack, because we do name have BBlack in our organization right now and going to click on next. And then notice the default is that the user must change the password during the next logon and that is a good practice. Another good practice would be to put in a temporary password that we share in our organization may be that we give someone when they are first hired. It is their temporary password and they will change their password when they logon. Click on next, the Wizard says ok. That is what you have done. You have created Bill Black with user logon name BBlack@bfe.vtc.com and user must change the password in the next logon. It is that what you want to do, you click on finish and we have created the user account. If we want to take a closer look this user's properties we could right click on the new user and then click on properties and we can see that we have not in fact created an entire user account. They have many different properties now. Account properties such as when they can log on and what computers they can access, telephone numbers all different types of information. We will take a look later. We can see that we have created a user account and the user accounts name is Bill Black. The same way that we can create user accounts we can also create computer accounts. So, in our next section we will take a look at creating computer accounts that is next.
