Administration / Installing and Configuring Admin Tools
Subtitles of the Movie
There are many tools that are available to a Windows Server 2003 administrator in order to control the environment. Some of these tools are automatically installed when we make a member server a domain controller. For example active directory users and computer, active directory sites services and active directory domains trust, are all automatically installed as part of a domain control installation. But there are tremendously many more tools then that for an administrator. There are tools for security, there are tools for additional configuration and all these tools can be found in the admin pak. Admin pak is spelled with P- A-K. It is an MSI file which is located in I386 directory on the Server 2003 disk. But if a server is already a 2003 member server then admin pak is also resident in that computer. So, to install administrative tools on a member server which is already a Server 2003 member server then all we have to do is to type adminpak on the run line adminpack.msi. If it is a client then we will access the I386 folder from the Server 2003 disk and then install admin pack on the client. Another way we will install the 2003 disk into the client and bind the folder and run the adminpak.msi. We can install these tools on a Windows 2000 client, Windows 2000 Professional and on a Windows XP professional client. So, this server is currently is a member server for Server 2003. So, let us take a look at how are you going to install the adminpak. So, what we are going to go out to the run line and start, run and we are going to here type in adminpak.msi and press Enter. Then it says ok, preparing to install and then the wizard will come up, which says we want to go ahead and install the administrative tools for the Server 2003. So, click on next and the tools are installed. You can see it is copying files, creating shortcuts, installing the tools that we need to administer the system. Registering DLLs and it is as simple as that. Click on finish and let us take a look at the tools we have now. So, click on start and then on administrative tools. We can see that we have now tremendous number of tools, that were not available to us prior to this installation. There are even more down here. So, we can now use this computer to administer the DHCP, DNS and Data Framework, whatever else we need as an administrator, and again this tool set does not have to be on server. It can also be installed onto a client; onto a Windows 2000 Professional Client onto an XP Professional Client. It is good to know that for the test. And as you notice some of the tools were installed were active directory domain of trusts, sites and services and active directory users and computers. In our next section we will take a look at active directory users and computers and how we can use it to create users computer and organization units. That is next.
