Administration / Logging On and the Security Dialog Box
Subtitles of the Movie
Logging on to a Window 2003 Server should be a simple process as long as we have the credentials. By the credentials I mean we need to have a username and password in order to log on. And once we put in the username and password we can log on to a default domain. Default domain will generally be listed. If we do not want to log on to the default domain, if we want to log on to a trusted domain we can use the @ symbol then type in the domain, or we can use the drop down box to click on the drop down box and then select domain. So these are the options that we have in logging on to the server. Now it should be mentioned here that the passwords that we use should be secured and in other words they should be complex passwords. It should not be shared with anyone, it should not be able to be guessed, it should be changed frequently. We will talk more about that one when we talk about security. But to log on box is pretty straight forward to make thing remember for the test. There are two ways to put in the domain information either a pen with the @ symbol and put in the domain or use the drop down box. When we press Control+Alt+Delete after we logged on we bring up the security dialogue box and, we can not illustrate dialogue box because it is so secured it does not show up in the recording. So we are just going to talk about what is in the security dialogue box. But when we press Control+Alt+ Delete, all those keys down at the same time we will get a box, it gives us all these options. It gives us the option to lock the computer. It is especially important for the server when we are running applications, we want to have the server locked up we certainly do not want to log off it. And we do not want to close any other applications, so we can lock the computer using the lock the computer option. This is especially important for servers but it is also used with clients. It is also used when a client or a user wants to got to launch, want to go to the restaurant they do not have to close all the applications, they can use lock the computer option. We can log off by selecting log off and we can continue through the process. We can shutdown if we have the capability to shutdown the server not all administrators should have the ability to shutdown the server. In other words just may be an account operator, they get on the server from time to time. They may not have the ability to shutdown the server; change the password, to change the password from server that is an option. Chances are that administrators are going to use the tools, that administrators use tool such as the access directory users computers to change password. But it is possible to change the password of the current user using the security dialogue box. We can access task manager from the security dialogue box. Task manager allows us to take a look at the processes in the computers, For example, processor, RAM and other processes, applications that are running and what not. But task manager can be accessed faster through the task bar just by right clicking on the task bar and click on task manager. If we press control alt delete we have a button to get to task manager as well and then we can also select cancel, why will we want to select cancel if we just got there. The security dialogue box has other information in it. It tells us as what user have we logged on as in other words we logged on as administrator, and if so to what domain and we can use the security dialogue box then to determine how I have logged on may be to help troubleshoot, to determine why we cannot access something or may be logged on as a different user than we thought we were. Also we can see on the security dialogue box, how long we have been logged on to a particular computer. So the security dialogue box is one of the tools that the administrator can use. But there are tremendous number of tools that an administrators use and we can install lot of tools, by installing the admin tools which could be installed on a server or on a client. So in our next section we will take a look at installing the administrator tools. That is next.
