We will be undergoing scheduled maintenance on May 20th, 2013 at 02:00 GMT.
OK, so we've got Windows 7 and it's out, so what's new about it? What's the compelling reason for me to go grab a copy of Windows 7 and upgrade from Vista or even XP?, OK? Well let's start off with Manageability, OK? What Microsoft realy strove for, especially on the cooperate side as a Client Operating System was manageability and a couple of things they did there's now customizable user account control that has simplified configuration for user accounts. Group Policy Preferences, no big surprise here if you've been involved with Microsoft Operating Systems, especially on the cooperate side for any length of time you have seen Group Policy get larger and larger and larger, it's like a small government now and it'll do just about anything you need to do to an operating system, especially in a Domain Environment, Active Directory Environment and you will notice that Group Policy Management and the application policies and some things you can set has gotten larger, a little more sophisticated, we'll take a look at some of those things in here. Direct Access is a new idea and this provides management and updating of Internet Connected Remote PC's which have really become the client of choice in a lot of corporate environments. Now we have usually in a lot of companies just as many people out there with remote Internet Connected Laptops and even work from home PC's then we have in the cooperate network itself within our private local area network. And so now we are looking at some management functionalities for these folks, notice even when they are off the cooperate network. So, we'll talk about that a little bit later on and kind of hone in on that. Now in the security aspect of Windows 7 it's all still basically the same, we've got the Windows Firewall and it's, some of that has been upgraded. But the big news here is the new BitLocker To Go OK, and the BitLocker to go will give you encryption for removable drives. Now these things have been the security person's nightmare for awhile, because I was in Best Buy, we have Best Buy here in Nashville and I was in the Best Buy store, electronics, you've probably seen it, it's nationwide in the U.S. and I don't know where else. But anyway enough about Best Buy it's not a course about them. But I was in there and you could get, they had a special on a 16 gig thumb drive and they had it on sale I think for 32.00 dollars, 31.99. You could get an 8 Gig for 14.00, OK? Now these are some of those get you in the door to look at everything else we've got specials, but still, how much data can I steal on a 16 Gig thumb drive and you know you can now get these open source programs to boot off the thumb drives and so forth. So this is a serious problem. How much data are we carrying around on these thumb drives now and all you've got to do is drop a thumb drive, pull a dollar out of your pocket right and the thumb drive drops on the floor in the coffee shop or something and there's all your data. So with BitLocker to go we can actually encrypt our removable hard drives, really cool functionality, we'll talk about it and play with it a little bit later. Touch Screen Support, this is a big one, HP came out with the Touch Screen Desktop PC a few months back, it's gotten a lot of attention. The Tablet PC World and all that, the Touch Screen Support is built into Windows 7, you can do some real cool stuff. If you go to the Microsoft Site and look around by the way you can download a software package that has some things, a couple of games and some apps you can play with. Now the one thing that you're going to notice in Windows 7 is really cool is you have a new Taskbar and let me be the first to give you the bad news for some people. The Quick Launch area is gone, so if you were as addicted to that as I was, I simply did not use the Start Menu. On all my machines I have the things that I use most of the time in the Quick Launch area, I just go down there and its one click to most the things that I use, OK? Now that is now gone, OK? I'm going to show you a trick to get it back but I don't think you're going to miss it. I will show you how to get it back but when I first looked at this thing I'm like no, this is, I don't change very well, OK? But I've worked with this thing after just about two or three days I really like the new Taskbar. So I don't think you're going to miss it but I'll show you how to get it back for those of you going through some serious withdrawal issues. Now Aero Features, you're going to hear about this, this is all the big marketing, the new interface that has that transparent, glassy, glossy look. But there are some features built into Aero that's just kind of wow kind of factor. We're talking about things like Peak, Shake, Snap, Preview, there's just all kind of really neat things that will drive you absolutely nuts at first, but I'm telling you after about two or three days on this thing you will not want to go back to Vista, OK? OK, that's kind of some of the what's new and we will concentrate on a lot of different things. I'm going to show you some tips and tricks that are possible now. A lot of the old tips and tricks still work here so that's what's new in Windows 7. There's some exciting, fun stuff in here and so we will key on those as we go through the course.
