Device Stage is another technology that you're going to hear about in Windows 7 but probably even before you hear about it outside this course, obviously, is that you're going to notice something really, really cool is going on. Now, Device Stages or Device Stage is a new way of handling all the peripheral devices, especially those USB things that we plug into our computers, OK? Now, one of the things you will notice about Windows 7 is when you stick a Thumb Drive in, it gets installed and it becomes operational very, very quickly, OK? But what's really neat about Device Stage is basically Microsoft has laid out a programming platform if you will an atmosphere that Device Manufacturers can work in. And what this is going to give you is a much more interactive really cool way to Configure Devices. Now let's think about something like a Cell Phone, OK? And one of the examples I found online was a Nokia 8 gigabyte cell phone and I want you to notice this is what will appear on your screen in Windows 7 when you plus this phone in to the USB port on your computer. And it'll take you through a couple of screens to get you here but it will give you links to Nokia site to get drivers and so forth and notice, shows you a picture of your device and then it lets you manage media on your device. You can actually browse the files on this phone here. It'll show information about the phone on Nokia's website. You can import your pictures and videos. You can download them manual. You can download S60 Applications for the phone. So rather then just plugging it in and getting this message that devices- that driver's installed and its ready to use, you can interact with that device and obviously this creates a whole, new world for plugging things into the computer OK? This is ultimately a new way for you to interact with devices that get connected to your PC in Windows 7. You get a very involved Visual Interface. Now this has to be implemented by the device makers. So as they develop their device drivers under the direction of Microsoft's rules and regulations and suggestions and so forth, they can also develop Device Stage Functionality. Now obviously the advantages of this, you get a much faster installation of all of your devices. You get a much richer interface and for complicated devices or complex devices, like various MP3 player type things, cell phones, the Blackberrys or that kind of stuff, things that have a lot going on in them, this gives the developers of those devices a platform to provide easier customization, easier management. They can build more functionalities and this is going to become a selling point for the devices themselves, that you can stick them into your Windows 7 machine and configure them, sell more software that you can download like this. This almost becomes kind of, for lack of a better term, an iTunes kind of platform. Where the device manufacturer's can build into the Device Stage Functionality, the ability for you to plug your device into the machine and purchase more functionalities, more applications and that sort of thing to your particular device. So, Device Stage is the platform that allows all this to happen. Now keep in mind there's going to have to be buy in from various device manufacturers but it has already started. And you're going to see this. So again, when will you notice this? You're probably going to notice this the next time when you load Windows 7 and you plug certain USB devices, cameras, cell phones and that sort of thing into your computer. You're going to notice a whole different world come up rather then just that little notification that slides up in the bottom right-hand portion of the screen saying Device Drivers are being installed. Now, what do you do about Device Stage? Nothing, just go buy stuff and stick it in your machine. But I wanted you to know about this because you will see and hear about it and it's like Device Stage OK, what is that? This is what it is and you'll like it when you see it.
