User Experience / The Desktop
Subtitles of the Movie
Now once you install Windows 7, one of the first things you're going to notice is the Desktop. Now, first of all, the Desktop is going to look very, very similar to Desktops in Vista and before. Now graphics are going to be different. You will probably have the standard Windows 7 feature, OK? Now if double click something like My Computer, you're going to notice though that you have this Aero, if you can notice like right here, you have this transparency around this and this is this Aero Glass feature that you'll hear a lot about. And we'll play with this quite a bit as we go through here. But I want to show you a couple of things about the Desktop that you're going to notice different right off the bat. You have your gadgets just like you did before. We'll play with gadgets a little later. But you're going to notice some changes in the Desktop. If you pull down you will notice that the Start Bar looks drastically different, especially the Task Bar, looks dramatically different. Now you'll notice on my machine, I've installed Firefox and pinned it. I'll show you how to do that later. When you click on the Start Button, you're going to notice that this is organized very, very similar to the Vista and you'll notice that All Programs is kind of hiding right down here and when you get into All Programs, you can scroll up and down and get to the various things that you would like to have, OK? Now, everything else is going to be pretty straightforward, OK? Let me show you a couple of things that are different. When I Right Click on the Desktop now I see a couple of different choices, OK? Now I have some Adobe Flash and sorts of things loaded so that's why you're seeing this right here. But if you'll notice here, I can still set my view and I can Auto Arrange my icons and all this sort of thing. I can sort and then of course I can refresh. I still have my new functionality so that I can set things in here. But notice I have Screen Resolution now. So I can jump right to here and grab my Screen Resolution and figure out how I want to set this thing and so forth, OK? Then if I right click, I can also get to my Gadgets. We'll talk about that later and then I can get to Personalize. Now you're going to be in this default theme right here, Windows 7, when you come up, most likely, OK, and you can, you'll notice there's a number of them here. For example, I'll choose Landscapes. You'll notice when I choose Landscapes, you here this sound there and you'll notice that it's showing me my Backgrounds, the Window Color, the sounds and then my Screensaver. Now I can change these. I can click Desktop Backgrounds and this is showing me the Backgrounds that are going to be in there, OK? Well I can say, you know what, I don't really like this one of the field, so I can take that out and it won't rotate. Now the pictures change by default every 30 minutes and I can change this down to three minutes, five minutes, ten minutes, whatever, OK? And if I want to see different ones, I'll have to change to a different theme to see those, OK? So now this lets me get those, I can change whether I want to Fill, Stretch, Tile, Center, all that sort of thing and I just click save changes and it comes out here. If I want to change my actual Window Color and if you'll notice, this changes kind of this transparent area up here. I can set that to whatever I like. OK, we'll leave it right there. I can set my Color Intensity right here. Bring it down to where it's a little more transparent or I can enable or disable the transparency. And then if I want to get really cool I can do Color Mixtures, OK? So there's no end. You can make a living out of changing these things. I can work with my sounds here and change what sounds I have out there and then of course I can go set my Screensavers, OK? And so you'll notice there's some Screensavers. I'll let you go out and play with those. OK, now that's all pretty straightforward. Notice I can get more themes online. This is kind of cool. Let me hit this right quick and show you. You can go out there and you can, you can grab some really, really cool stuff, the Coca-cola, Ducati, Avatar, Ferrari. There's just a lot of stuff out here that you can get and then you notice there's some Desktop Backgrounds that you can grab as well and those are all out there. Notice this is coming from Microsoft.com. And I will close that and this is how we're going to change everything from the resolution to anything else I want to change in the Desktop. So nothing major league is different here. We will look at some changes in the Start Button. We'll look at the Task Bar. Certainly that's where a lot of the biggest changes have been made and then we'll just talk about the Desktop in general, OK? So this is just a good introduction to the Desktop and now let's jump into some of the cooler functionalities of Windows 7 that have to do with the Desktop.
