Now let's talk about Windows XP Mode. This is another one of those things you're going to hear a lot about in Windows 7 and before I talk about XP Mode let me talk a little bit about what we're trying to solve here and that is, what if older programs won't run on Windows 7? Now, you're not going to have a whole lot of problems with this for kind of the standard major programs out there, but you will have some problems with various custom-built programs. There are a couple of Tools here before we get to XP Mode that I just want to point out. First of all there is the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and then we have the capability of adjusting the program execution environment and I want to show you both of those so let's jump out to the Desktop and I'll show you each of these. OK, now. From the Desktop what I want to do is open Control Panel and here we go and I can come down to Troubleshooting OK? And if I open Troubleshooting you'll notice the first thing that I see there is Run programs made for previous versions of Windows and this will open the Program Compatibility Troubleshooting Tool. Now I could have also gotten to that by clicking on Start and clicking Search and typing program compatibility and would have taken me right here. Now when I hit Next it will look through the Registry and it's going to give me a list of all the applications that I have on the machine. Well, notice Flash CS4 and if I hit Next it will say OK, let me choose compatibility settings based on your problem, OK, and I'm going to say that it worked in earlier versions but the program opens but doesn't display, OK, then I can hit Next and I can say, it won't switch to full screen, the transparency and display, whatever and then it has changed some program options for me, OK, and now it's telling me that I can start the program and try it. OK, well, I'm going to Cancel that because I don't want to set those settings out there. So, that's the Troubleshooter OK? There's another way to do this and that is to actually go to the program itself, so I'll go into My Computer, Local Disk C, go into my Program Files, x86, because that's an old 386 program, then jump into Adobe, go into Flash CS4, then I will scroll down - here's the executable file. Now, if I right-click on this executable file and go to Properties you will notice there is a Compatibility tab, OK? Now I may have dreamed it but I think I mentioned this somewhere else in the course, but I'll show it to you here again, right here under Compatibility Mode notice I can choose one of these other operating systems and it will run it as if it's in that environment and especially going to emulate that environment. Sometimes that will help. Sometimes it's magic, other times it doesn't seem to do a whole lot, OK, so you can set that right here, OK? I want you to notice something else. You may have noticed it when I right-clicked. If I right-click on the executable you will see Troubleshoot Compatibility right there and it basically kicks me into the Program Compatibility Troubleshooting Tool and it's already running and it kind of saves me a step OK? Now, let me jump back in to the PowerPoint. So, my next option, if the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter isn't working and I can't adjust the Execution Environment I can run XP in a virtual environment. Now this means a virtualized situation OK? This gives me the ability to absolutely, positively run older apps in XP, as if they're running on XP. Now this is going to open a virtual machine on the Windows 7 Desktop and really all Microsoft has done here is given you a free version of XP with Service Pack 3 preloaded running in a virtual hard drive in a virtual instance on the Desktop. Now, this thing will take advantage of your CD-ROM and your hardware and so forth - it's great for making an application run. Now it's not going to be good for gaming, it's not going to be good for display-intensive things and you'll just have to play with it, but this is another shot for you to get those applications running. Now, what do you need to run Windows XP Mode? First of all you need Windows 7 Professional or Enterprise or Ultimate OK? Then you're going to have to go out to Microsoft's site and download and install Virtual PC. Now if you go to Microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc you will see a little link that says Get Virtual PC and XP Mode now and you want to go to that site because you need the version of Virtual PC that's built for Windows 7 and you need to get the XP Mode machine. Now you can run into problems with this because your machine will have to have the proper virtualization functionality and so forth working on it, OK, so the best thing I can tell you do is go out and download these, work with them. I think you'll like it. It feels a bit funky if you've never done virtualization things, but this is a cool way to run XP. Now, once you do that, once you download it and you get it all working, let me show you what you end up with. If you click on your Start and go to All Programs, if I come down here you will notice, you will see Windows Virtual PC and if you open it up you will see XP Mode, OK, and I'm out of time on this video, but go out, download this, install it, play with it. I think you'll like it and I think it'll get you around some of the issues you may have with older apps that won't run that need the XP environment, OK? And by clicking right here on XP Mode it will open up that Virtual Machine, boot it up and you'll be ready to install software and then you're ready to go.
