Now one of the cool new tools that you have in Windows 7 to work with is something called ResMon, or Resource Monitor, OK, and I want to kind of first of all show you where this came from OK? Now, Vista had something, they had a tool called Reliability and Performance Monitor. Now we've always had Task Manager, right? So, you Ctrl-Alt-Delete from the Desktop, or actually from anywhere and you can choose Task Manager, right? And it would show you the Processes that were running and I could right-click the Process and end it, and so forth and I can see you know, Services and Applications and so forth, but it wasn't unusual to see things like SVC Host out here, Service Host, or something like that and you're thinking, what is that? And what is it doing, and why is it running? Well, let's talk about ResMon and show you how it compares to that, OK? So I will close the Windows Task Manager and I will go to Start, Search and I will type resmon, R-E-S-M-O-N and it will pop up the Resource Monitor. Now if you don't like that you can go to Control Panel and if you will come down here you will see Performance and Information Tools and you can go into there, then you'll go into Advanced Tools and then you will see Open Resource Monitor. Takes you to the same place OK? I like Search, resmon. And I'm going to make this Full Screen so we can look at it and I want you to see what's happening here. Now there is some really, really cool stuff going on OK? First of all you will notice that there are a number of tabs here. The first one is Overview, then we have a CPU, Memory, Disk and Network. And let's just kind of go through this. Now, one thing you need to understand that Resource Monitor is similar to the old Network Monitor, the Packet Capturing type device, what was called a sniffer; this is a similar thing. Now, notice if I click on Monitor, it is running right now, it is monitoring things, OK, but notice the first thing and I can pull these down and see them. It shows me exactly what's running on the CPU and it's showing me all kinds of information and notice I can hide and select columns that I want to show and notice there are some things that I don't have on here and I can add User Name, so I can see who's actually running that, OK, I'll hide that column. And I can move these columns around if I don't like the order they're in, OK? Now, notice what this is showing. This is showing, in the order of the average CPU, so if I click here, what exactly is running on the CPU here? Well, obviously I'm running HyperCam, a program that I'm using to capture this information for you. Then there's a number of other systems running, notice service host is running, but it gives me a little more information. It moved on me there. And what I'm going to do is just spread this out. This is LocalServiceNoNetwork, this is a LocalService, this is DecomLaunch, that has to do with a distributed component object model, net services, RPCSS - now here's what I really like. OK, so I've got a service host, RPCSS. What exactly is that? I can right-click and choose Search Online, now how cool is that?, OK? This will start to give me information, RPCSS, high memory and I can just click on this and I can start to go out and chase down and see exactly what's running on my machine. This has got to be one of the coolest things that I've seen in Windows 7. And I've said that probably, you know, 50-60 times so far in this Course. Now, if I go down I can click each one of these, double-click them, actually single-click them and they will expand up, single-click then and then they will expand up and I'll have to scroll down and for Memory, I can see everything that's running and if I don't like it, oh wait. I've got to go back to service. I'm on the wrong thing. Notice, same thing on Firefox I can see everything that's running - this is across the network. I can see what is sent, what is received OK? And then I can expand and contract these back up again just like before. Notice right here the sqlwriter, sqlbrowser, I can see every aspect of SQL Server, not just SQL Server itself and it's probably easier if I come up here, whoa and click here and put these things in alphabetical order. OK? Now, the ReportingServices, if I don't like what's running on SQL Server I can right-click it and I can End the Process, I can End the whole Tree, OK, I can Suspend the Process and Resume it, so I can get a lot of information going here. Now, notice I can go over to the individual tab up here and this gives me a lot more information, in some cases. Notice on my physical memory it's showing me that I have 4 Gigs installed, how much is available, how much is reserved, that means that I can't use. It is showing me here that I have 1.3 Gigs in use; I've got this in Standby; I've got 1466 still sitting out there free and you'll notice I can see graphs out here on my Memory information on the Disk. If I click that it is showing me the processes right now that are running with Disk Activity OK? Then it's showing me the actual disk activity and even the files that are being written right now and if I run this over you can actually see, here are the vids that are being recorded right now and so you'll come on down and you can see other stuff, OK? Now, notice it's showing you right here, as my file grows on the video that I'm recording right now, you can see it going up, really, really cool stuff, right? So this lets you, at a glance, go in and see, wait a minute what's happening on this machine right now? Now, notice on the Firefox that I have open right here, I just opened it up, this is showing me the address on my machine and you can also see Remote addresses that I connected to - notice I'm connected to Google out there on that, OK, and so the bottom line here, I can see almost anything I need to see and know exactly what's going on with my computer. Now, this is Resource Monitor OK? So, make sure that you go play with this and use this. This is an incredible tool and you can know exactly what's going on at any point with your computer.
