Introducing Visio 2007 / Maintaining Visio 2007

Subtitles of the Movie

You'll recall that when we did our initial installation of Visio 2007 that we had a choice of doing either a default install, the specific interface option was called installed now, or we could click the custom button to access that Windows installer feature tree from which we can pick and choose which Visio features we want installed. Now, let's assume that we did a standard installation, that is to say a default installation and then we realized some time later, you know, I wish I installed such and so a component. How do I maintain an existing installation of Visio? Do I have to reinstall the product from scratch? The good news is no, we don't. Let me show you now how we can maintain a current installation of Visio 2007. Where we need to go is in XP, the add remove programs control panel and in Windows Vista, the, let's open up control panel. I never can remember exactly what it's called. There it is. Programs and features. So again, either add remove programs in XP or programs and features in Vista. I'm here in Vista, so I will bring up the programs and features control panel and what we'll need to do is scroll down. This is an alphabetized list of installed applications. Until we see Microsoft Office Visio Professional 2007. Or it would be Visio Standard, depending upon your edition. We'll select that entry, come up to the menu bar and we'll choose change. Notice what happens. We're brought back into the setup routine and it's asking us to do we want to add or remove features, repair an installation that may have become corrupted or damaged somehow, or remove the product. Well, let's select add or remove features and then click continue. This brings us back to that Windows installer tree that we can simply drill into and disable elements that we no longer need. You'll recall again that the states for one of these components would either be run from my computer, which means the computer is installed, installed on first use or if we want to uninstall a feature, we would select not available. Also remember that when you see a plus sign, that lets us know that there are sub-components and what we can do at the root level here for a feature is choose run all from my computer if you want to install all of the sub-features in addition to the first-level feature. Now, I'm going to click back here and I'm actually going to ex out or cancel the setup here because as you might remember, we've installed the full product, installing all possible options. Regardless of what you choose, you're eventually given this close dialog and then that's it. We'll close out of control panel. You may be prompted to insert your Visio 2007 CD and I doubt it, but it is possible that you're prompted for a reboot. Again, it depends upon what features you're adding or subtracting. So just keep all of that in mind. Best practice when you're installing or maintaining an application, close out of any other active or open applications you may have running or open on your system at that time.
