Getting Help in Visio 2007 / Using the Visio 2007 Viewer
Subtitles of the Movie
In an earlier lesson, I showed you how you can save a Visio drawing as an alternate file format. For instance, as a jpg graphic if you needed to share a drawing with another person who did not own the Visio application. Now, all that's well and good; however you're not going to have the level of interactivity that you may otherwise have, certainly, if the destination person had Visio installed on his or her computer or, as we're going to learn in this lesson, if that destination user were running the Microsoft Visio 2007 Viewer. Now, you should be aware that for just about all of the Microsoft Office Suite applications, Microsoft makes available a free add-on called a viewer that allows just that; somebody who doesn't have a license for the full product to still be able to view the source file. Now understand, it's a read-only view. It's not a modifiable view. But none the less, it's a heck of a lot better than the user not being able to see the document at all. Are we agreed? Now then, in order to get the Visio Viewer, I would recommend you do a Google search for Visio 2007 Viewer and that'll bring you to the page that you're seeing on your screen right now. The Visio 2007 Viewer, as Microsoft tells us, in fact let me boost the font a little bit, it allows anyone to view Visio drawings and diagrams created with Visio 5 all the way to 2007 inside their Internet Explorer version 5 or later web browser. So what this actually is, it's an Active X control, or a plug-in that integrates into your Internet Explorer browser and allows read-only view of Visio diagrams. Again, it's quite nice because you can zoom in, you can do panning, you can do zooming, you do have quite a degree of interactivity with the document, it's just that you can't change its contents. So it's a relatively small download. I mean, depending on how you, what you consider small to be. It looks like as of this recording the Visio Viewer is 7.7 megabytes. But we would just click download and we would just bring the file down and you can share it with whomever you need to who needs to be able to view your Visio diagrams. So I'm glad that you're aware of this and again, I'll finish with, with a reminder that there are viewers available for most of the Office applications. And they can make file sharing in a business environment much, much easier. Or alternatively, if you're a traveling person and you conduct seminars, you may be in a situation where you need to display a Visio diagram to a group of folks and the computer that you're using doesn't have a full installation of Visio. That's another case where the Visio 2000 Viewer can be a very great help.
