Getting Help in Visio 2007 / Configuring Online Content Settings

Subtitles of the Movie

Microsoft has historically prided itself, and for good reason I might add, at their online help system and its robustness. I'm glad to say that Visio 2007 is no different from the other Office 2007 apps in as much as it's remarkably easy for you to get your questions answered if, for instance, you're stuck on how to accomplish a certain task or if you want a more robust description of a particular feature. So before we get into accessing the help system directly, I think it would behoove us to take a look at the online content options, also called privacy options, afforded by Visio. After all, some folks accused Microsoft of taking a big brother approach and having their user's computers connected to the Microsoft website without explicitly informing them. So, here's how that works. First we want to open Visio. It doesn't matter whether we're in a document or not. And then we'll open the tools menu and come down to trust center. This brings up the trust center dialog box and we see on the left here we have several different categories. We're interested in the final category called privacy options. And for the online help options, the options that we're specifically interested in, would be this first one here; search Microsoft Office online for help content while connected to the Internet. Now, you have to understand that the built-in online help of Visio 2007, unless you're connected to the Internet, is only as current as when that CD ROM was pressed by Microsoft. Hopefully it makes sense to you that you probably want to enable this option to make sure you're receiving the most updated content directly from Microsoft. Let's see. What else do we have? The second option is also quite helpful; the show featured link options. What this will do is if it's enabled, download up-to-date headlines and templates directly from Microsoft Office online and show those to you in the online help dialog. Again, this is very nice in terms of keeping up to date with what's going on with Visio and leveraging free downloads from Microsoft. The third option, you'll recall that we covered this a little bit earlier in the course, download a file periodically that helps determine system problems. We need to make sure that this option is ticked, or turned on, if we want to run the Office diagnostics tool. If you want to provide feedback to Microsoft, perhaps you've discovered a bug. Hopefully that's not the case, or if you just have a request for a feature improvement or a new feature, you can sign up for what's called the customer experience improvement program, which provides vehicle for you to offer feedback to Microsoft. So those are the main options dealing with privacy as it relates to the online help system. In the other lessons in this module, we're going to look at how to actually access that help.
