The software requirements for SQL Server 2012 is some data that you need to be aware of, you need to know predominantly for the exam. Now usually in the real world you're going to read this stuff or better yet, you are going to put your disk in or, or access your iSO if it's virtual and it's going to start the installation. It will check to see if you have everything you need, if not and you have an Internet connection it will attempt to download it. If it doesn't have it on the installation media then it will generally update anything that it can. Occasionally you may be told to stop the installation, go install some piece of software and then come back and start over. So you need to know these for the exam especially but it's not going to hurt you for the real world. First of all understand the operating system that you must be running to install SQL Server 2012 is Windows Server 2008, Service Pack 2. You can do either the 32 or 64-bit version or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. Now notice Release 2 or R2 version right here of Windows Server 2008, notice the distinction. R2 Service Pack 1 is 64-bit only, there is no 32-bit version of this and so that could create an issue. Keep that in mind as you start to build that out if you are on 2008 R2. Now the operating system for Server can be the Data Center Edition, Enterprise, Standard or the Web Edition. So any of those editions will take SQL Server 2012, you can load it up no problem. Now oddly enough some of you that's way outside anything that makes any sense, the .NET Framework. You will need both the .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and 4.0, not to worry here, if your machine doesn't have it, these are generally just installed for you, it may notify you that it didn't have it and ask you if you want to install it. I've seen it do a couple of things as we've moved through the betas and so forth. But this will take care of it, it's not like you are going to have to do this before hand, not usually. Windows PowerShell, you'll have to have PowerShell 2.0, this should not be a huge problem and again it should update it for you. SQL Server Support Tools and Software, the SQL Server Native Client you will need, set up Support Files and you will need a minimum of 4.5 on the Version for Windows Installer. Again, most of this stuff you're never ever going to see it as a problem, you may see it in a checklist, it should either install it automatically, you can download it but you know how computers are and these are Microsoft computers anything could pop up and you'll be told to go get this stuff. Where you really need to be aware of this, is on the exam, make sure you understand this stuff enough to notice when something is awry. On Internet Explorer you need IE7 or later and keep the Firefox ideas to yourself here. And this is a Microsoft exam, it's a Microsoft product, they are going to call for Internet Explorer and you are just going to have to smile and nod when they do okay? As far as Virtualization Software, the requirements if you're going to do virtualization, you'll have to be running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 and it will have to be running the Hyper-V Role or you can run Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1. Again running the Hyper-V Role, pretty straightforward, commonsense for a lot of situations but watch this on the exam, especially and also keep in mind on the exam, anytime before you begin an install, you go verify your hardware requirements and you verify your software requirements and make sure you're in compliance. So just watch for that step on the exam as well.
