Knowing the SQL Server 2012 Hardware Requirements is going to help you in two areas. Number one it's going to help you in the real world when you prepare to install SQL Server. This needs to be one of the first things you do, is check your hardware requirements. Also on the Certification exam for SQL Server Database Administrators, you also need to know the stuff to be able to recognize when the hardware that you are working with in a question, either complies or fails to comply with hardware requirements. Now when we're talking about SQL Server 2012, understand that the recommended hardware and software requirements for SQL Server are going to vary based on first of all the components you are installing. There's a lot of different things here, talking about those services and all that. The workload that your database is going to be under and you could have multiple databases, probably will and the class of the processor that you are using in your server. Now most of the time when you see something that says you know, published requirements, anytime you see that data, they are probably talking about Microsoft considers a typical SQL Server 2012 installation. Now that is not going to include things like Analysis Services, Heavy Utilization of SQL Server Integration Services, they are probably just talking about a pretty Standard Database Engine and that's about it. Historically this typical SQL Server Installation has been the basis for test questions when it comes to hardware requirements, no reason to think any differently on this one. So let's just kind of go through these real quickly, these are common sense, just make sure you know these to the point that you can see when you are outside them, I wouldn't necessarily say you have to memorize them although you probably will. There's just not that much to see here but just be comfortable with these and be able to recognize when somebody is outside the lines here. First of all for the processor, for a 64-bit installation you can use the AMD Opteron, AMD Athlon 64, Intel Xeon or the Intel Pentium 4 processors. Now the Intel Processors must have EM64T Support and they will usually say EM64T Supported in parenthesis right after the name of the processor, so just keep that in mind. Now the speed of the processor, it needs to be 1.4 gigahertz minimum. 2.0 gigahertz or faster is recommended, real world, faster is better no matter what speed you've got. Now for a 32-bit installation, Intel Pentium 3 compatible or faster processor is what you are going to need, 1.0 gigahertz minimum speed, 2.0 or faster recommended. Okay. Pretty straightforward here, a lot of times the test questions will vary widely on this and it kind of becomes obvious for most people but if you aren't really comfortable with this sort of thing, you haven't done a lot of real world installations and so forth. Then you may just want to memorize this data, reproduce it on the page, it's the test, before you actually begin the test talk about that later. Memory, you need at least 1 gigabyte of RAM memory minimum for SQL Server 2012, 4 or more gigabytes is recommended and same thing here, doesn't matter how much you have, a little more would probably be better. The maximum amount of memory that you can put on a SQL Server installation is going to depend on the SQL Server 2012 Edition that you are running. Now when it comes to disk space, this is another place that is very strongly affected by which services you install and utilize. For example if you just install the Database Engine, that little section alone is going to need 811 megabytes of disk space to be installed. Analysis Services 345 megabytes, Reporting Services 304 megabytes, Integration Services 591 megabytes and then your Client Components, notice 1823 megabytes. And in English that means 1.8 gigabytes so that's kind of where your disk space is going, you can add up what you are going to be using there to see about how much disk space you are going to need. Now these are the typical hardware requirements, if you use these to prepare for your exam, you should be okay on any questions that pop up there. Again they are not going to say what's the minimum amount of memory for a SQL Server 2012 installation, they are going to throw an installation at you and point out that it's got 256 megs of RAM and it's going to be up to you to say, well this won't work, they don't have enough memory in this machine. So that's kind of what you are going to see but that's your Hardware Requirements for a typical SQL Server 2012 installation, that's the hardware.
