Publisher 2007 Foundation / Using Rulers and Guides

Subtitles of the Movie

In this movie, let's take a look at Publisher's rules and guides. These allow for more precise placement of objects. They don't print, but they will allow us to add things in a more balanced manner. You'll notice our rulers are at the top left of our screen. As we scroll up or down, see how the zero matches up with our left and the zero matches up with our top? You'll notice this ruler is going by inches. If we want to change that, we can go to tools and options, go to the general tab and right here it will let you change that unit of measurement if you would like to. I'm going to leave it on that and go ahead and click OK. The rulers, if you don't see them on your screen for some reason, just go to view and rulers. I made mine disappear and if you go back to view and rulers, there they are again. Remember, you can take that ruler and drag it and move it wherever you want if you would like to. You can pull it back a little bit. So if you need to bring it in closer when you're in a smaller percentage view, that's just fine. Grab those and move them where you need them. I'm going to pull it back up there. The next thing that you can do is use ruler guides. Ruler guides you simply go to the ruler bar. See how it tells you you can create one? Click, drag and there you put it on your document. It's a nice green line, doesn't print. You can put your mouse on it and move it up and down anytime you want. You can also go back to the ruler, drag again and have as many of those as you want. You can precisely match them up to wherever you want on your ruler over here or however you want to do that. You can also go over to your vertical ruler and make another guide by simple click, drag, bring it over and I've got my guide there. Click, drag, bring it over. This will allow me to precisely lay out my document, plan out the spaces, get the graphics where I want them and the text where I want them. So if something like this helps you plan your document, this is a good thing to do to start with. If I don't want the guides anymore, I can hide them. One way I can do that is go to view, boundaries and guides. Woop, they're gone. If I decide I want them back, go to view, boundaries and guides, they come back. Also notice while we're there that little shortcut key. Quick little shortcut key so you don't have to stop and pick up your mouse. If you want to just remove the ruler guides completely but leave that nice blue edge on there for you, simply go to arrange, ruler guides and clear all ruler guides and there we go. They're gone. So the ruler guides will definitely help you lay things out and work with them a little bit more. So let's stop this movie and then in the next one, we're going to look more at some snap-to options and some other layout options.
