Publisher 2007 Foundation / Working with Toolbars

Subtitles of the Movie

In this movie, let's discuss the toolbars a little more in depth. Right now, we have our basic toolbars showing. The standard toolbar is right here. If we click the first button on the standard toolbar, that brings us a new blank document. You'll notice it names it publication three, just as a generic name until we actually save it. The next button over is open. I can open up a Publisher file and obviously different types of files if I want to. Then we have the save button. If I click save and I will just call this Melanie's File, I can go ahead and save that file then to my computer. The next option over is printing. We'll have lots of looks at those printing options later on. The next one, your print preview. So you can look at that document as a whole printable layout to see if you're fitting it on one page or two, whatever you're looking at. I'm going to close that for now. As you keep going across, you'll have more options as we work with our documents. But those are our very basic sets of information. I am going to use my objects toolbar now to show you a little bit about how that works. I'm going to click the text box button and drag a box here and then I'm going to type in it. You'll notice it gave me a little tip here that I can press F9 to zoom in. That shows me I mistakenly typed it incorrectly here. I can right click on that red line, tell it that it's Publisher and I've got it fixed. Now, to zoom in and zoom out like we just did there, we can hit the minus signs and the plus signs in our toolbar. These little minus signs and plus signs will zoom you in and out. I can also use this down arrow and choose a different zoom in and out option. One thing you might use a lot is the whole page options, so again you can see what that looks like, make sure you're within your boundaries here so that it will print nice and balanced. Those are the basic items on your standard toolbar and then one of the items on your objects toolbar is that text box. Everything on your objects toolbar you're going to click it, come over to your document with the crosshair, click and drag. That's how those are always going to work. They're objects. Remember, everything that you put in Publisher is an object. You can't just start typing. You have to create an object first. Now, I'm going to go up here to our first text box and zoom in a little bit. You'll notice that the formatting toolbar became active when I selected the text. If I click outside of there, see how my formatting toolbar grays out? So if you need those options, make sure you've selected the text box or the item that you want to change. Right there you have your typical font list so you can select that and change any of the looks that you want to. A little quick tip for a font box; if you know what the font begins with, you can simply type in the letter. I type in C. See how it sent me right to the those categories? The other option I have right here are the font sizes. I can select a specific font size. One thing you can do is click that down arrow, type in a number even if it's not on the list, hit your enter key and it automatically switches it. Also note, you can hit the down arrow and you can go by half points. I can type in 17.5, hit enter and there we go. So keep those little quick tips and options in mind. As you go across the formatting toolbar, again, some of the basics; your bold, italic and underline. If you do any word processing, you've probably worked with those a little bit so those are there and a lot of these as we keep going through Publisher, we will learn more specifically what they're all for, but just be aware of those options that are there right now. Those will help you get a very basic good start. And again, if you need to see what toolbars you've got, go to view toolbars. If you don't need the connect text boxes toolbar, just click that, it removes it and anytime you need it back, go back, same thing. View toolbars, connect text boxes and there it actually appeared right there.
