Start a New Project / Use Summary Tasks
Subtitles of the Movie
Alright in this module we will continue our work with the project that we started here and we've got this list of tasks. In this module is really more about thinking about the project management then the actual use of the tool. Of course I'll show you how to use the tool here but what we're talking about here is creating sub tasks and when you create sub tasks you're actually organizing your project into phases and the phases can be represented with something called summary tasks. So by creating sub tasks we also will create summary tasks and I'll show you how to do that here, this is the button pushing in this module, that's what this is all about. I want to start with just selecting this task here, the first task writing the script. This is what really the first part of what might be called pre-production so we'll use the insert menu and create a new task here and we'll call this task pre-production. And the duration don't worry about it right now because we don't care, what we will see when we create the summary task is that the duration will be defined by the summary tasks that are underneath it. Once again, this pre-production task that we just created is going to end up being one of the first phases, the first phase in this project that we've got going. And the way that I make it a summary task which again chunks things up into phases is that I will select a task underneath and then I will indent that task. So I'll go to the project menu here with a task selected and I will choose the outline option here in the menu and I will indent the task. So if I indent this, the thing that's above it becomes the summary task and it will be defined. Notice that the definition, it changed from the question mark to a one day duration and that is because once again this summary task is defined by the sub tasks that's underneath it. Now if I want to continue that I can also select multiple tasks at once and I could indent them by again going to the project menu and then choosing the outline option. Or if you just remember the right click you're in good shape here. So if you right click from the context menu you'll see down toward the bottom that you can indent a group of tasks all at once. So now that summary task preproduction is exactly as long, in this case as the longest task in the sub task which is in this case, scout locations, it's two weeks. So the entire length of that summary task will be two weeks as well. Now can you change your mind about things that you've done, things that you've made sub tasks, summary tasks? Well absolutely so if this- you don't want to be a sub task anymore you can out dent it by right clicking and choosing out dent. But notice what happens now, because I have out dented develop budget I've got these sub tasks and those sub tasks now define this as a summary task So if I don't want these to be sub tasks as well I need to remember that I need to select those and out dent those as well.
