Microsoft Project 2007 Tutorials

Start a New Project / Create a New Project

Subtitles of the Movie

Alright welcome to chapter 2 of this look at Project 2007 in the first chapter you may have noticed we took out Project 2007, kicked the tires a little bit and got started with a new project and used one that we created a template or created a new project from an existing template to use that to get comfortable with the product. Now we're going to open up a blank project and we do that by opening up Microsoft Office Project 2007. So whatever shortcut you've used or whatever navigational tool you used to get there go ahead and open up the application and in this case I just went to the Vista start menu and XP it'll look a little bit different but I think all of you who are using project probably know how to launch the application. So now we're here in the project window once again and we want to start by creating a project plan and that just generally sets some parameters about what the project is going to be about. So to set the basic information about a project just go to the project menu here and what you want to look for is the last selection on the bottom of the menu called project information. That opens up this dialog box right here and as you may guess already, if you have a tool that helps you as a project manager, then you probably already understand that this tool should be mainly focus on time and if it's not focused on time it should probably focus on cost because those are going to be the two biggest things that you manage as a project manager. So that's of course what is specified in the project information dialog box here. And what we can do with this project start date is we can just simply type in the start date or the current date of the project and what's interesting to note here is that projects really only looking for one date and that is the project start date, when is this thing going to start? Is it going to start tomorrow on the first of May 2007 and if we know that information, if we say you know what this is going to start actually not tomorrow but in this drop down, I'll say it's going to start on June the 1st, all you have to do then is start entering in the component tasks of the project and then project will use the duration of those tasks and then calculate how long the overall project is. So notice that this finish date is all grayed out here because again you don't really set the finish date in the project information dialog box, that is something that project will do for you based on the tasks that give you project. Now the other way to schedule this is from finish and if I select schedule from, project finish date, notice that this stuff is grayed out right here or the start date is grayed out I should say and the finish date, if this project has to be done by August 31st for example then again we use the duration of the tasks that are in this project to back things up and give us that start date of the project. So I think most projects will have a firm project start date as opposed to a project end date so we'll go ahead and do that and we'll create this new project with the start date of, in this case 6-1 of 07. So that's really all the information we need to give this project at this time, we could also assign a calendar, either the night shift or 24 hour calendar but we'll deal with that timing of the calendar a little bit later on as we deal with calendar management rather then just simply in this chapter we're going to be focused mostly on task management. So once we're done again setting the parameters of the project, click on OK and then what you probably want to do is you want to save this project. So under the project menu, file, save and then we can just save this thing to wherever we want to. Whether it be a folder out on the server somewhere or locally on our computer and I'll go ahead and save this as a movie project. So if you tuned in to the 2003 project tutorial, you probably are familiar that I did a movie project in that tutorial, I'm going to do the same type of project in this tutorial as well. So I'll click on save and off we go.
