Introduction / Getting Started

Let's take a minute to talk about some concepts I'll be using throughout this tutorial. I'd also like to take this opportunity to give you a short tour of some of the areas to which I'll be referring in many of the scenes, but first thing's first. We actually need to launch or open Microsoft Office PowerPoint. Go to our desktop shortcut. Now, this may or may not be installed on your computer. It depends on who did the installation and if you chose that option during the installation. So I just double click here and viola! We have Microsoft PowerPoint waiting for us to do something beautiful and magical with it. Well, one of the things you need to consider is how you like to work with PowerPoint. Some folks like to have it minimized, which means it does not take up the full amount of screen real estate. This is in case you like to see other applications or have access to those things. For me, when I'm working on one thing, I like to stay working on one thing. I have the attention span of a three-year old. I don't need anymore distractions. So what you can do, what I like to do is maximize this like so so it takes up the full real estate. Now, one of the other options that you can do, a little trick, is to double click the title bar, this is this area up here. Just double click and it'll automatically maximize the window for you. Now, let's take a look at some of the features that I'm going to be discussing throughout this tutorial. After all, I would hate for you to scratch your head and say huh? What is he talking about when he says quick access toolbar? What's the quick access toolbar? Well, I'm glad you asked. Let's move over to the top, left side of our screen to quick access toolbar. Now, yours will most likely look a little bit different unless you've already started to play with this. What this does is pulls commands from the old file menu that you saw in previous versions of PowerPoint, used to have a thing up here that says file, edit, so forth and so on and right now that's gone. So what you can do is pull some of those commands and place them up here in the quick access toolbar. Let's take print preview and it's added that to the toolbar. Again, just one click and I get a print preview of what's on the slide, which is not much. Ok? So if I want to get rid of that, I turn that off and close print preview, go back to our regular thing. Now, my favorites that I like to have are the ability to create a new document, open a folder, to access other documents I've already worked on, save, very important, undo, because I make lots of mistakes and redo. Now, why would I want to have save up here when it's probably somewhere throughout here? Well, that brings us to our next area, which is the Microsoft Office button; this kind of little hidden thing here. Hover over it; it's going to tell you, this is going to give you some more commands. Click once and it's going to open up your window here and then you have save, save as, different options, print, prepare, send, publish, close, so forth and so on. For me, I don't like to click. If I want to save something, I don't want to go here and there again. That's two clicks. For me, one click does the job. Now, the Microsoft Office button is very similar to the quick access toolbar and is actually, I like to think of it as the closest living relative to the previous versions of PowerPoint, from the old file menu commands. Now, the next area I want to talk about is the ribbon. The ribbon refers to this area up here on the top of your screen. And we're going to get to the features of the ribbon a little later on, but for now, when I say ribbon, I'm talking about this area. Now, at the top of the ribbon we have these things here which are called tabs. Ok? And then within each tab, we have a tab group. Here's one, two, three; one, two, three. These tab groups house the different commands that are related to that tab. Now, the main area here is called the work area. Makes sense; this is where we do 99.9 percent of our work. But before we go, I want to show you one neat little goodie is called the zoom slider. Let's turn our attention down here to the right and we have this little thing here. We can hit it, called the zoom slider and what this does is zooms in painfully close at times on our slide. Alright? Pretty nifty, pretty self-explanatory. Let's take a quick review of just what I talked about. We have our quick access toolbar. Where is it? Point to it. If you pointed here, you're right. How about our Microsoft Office button? Right there. The ribbon? Good. Right through here, our work area. Right in here and bonus points for those who can get to the zoom slider before I do. Ready, Go. And there's our zoom slider. That should be enough to get us started.
