Getting Familiar with PowerPoint 2007 / Working with the Ribbon

Subtitles of the Movie

One of the new features of PowerPoint 2007 is the ribbon. The ribbon is the graphical interface and it's right here; this area. This is the graphical interface that replaces the menu system that was used in previous versions of PowerPoint. The menu system looks a lot like this, although it went by different names; file, edit, so forth and so on and was usually placed at the top of the screen. Well, now with the Office 2007 applications, we have this thing called the ribbon. You're going to find this in Word, Excel, our friend PowerPoint, Access and, of course, Outlook. The goal of the folks at Microsoft in developing the ribbon was to help people to focus on what they want to do, rather than worrying about the details of how to do it. Now, I think you'll find yourself using less clicks to get the same amount of work done. Let's take a little closer look at how this ribbon thing works. So this panel, again, called the ribbon, this holds command buttons and icons, which are in turn grouped by tabs, like so. Now, these are the tabs we have. We have home, insert, design, animations, slideshow, review, view and add-ins. You will also see some content-specific tabs pop up in this area, depending on what you're doing. We'll see those a little later throughout the tutorial. When I click a tab, we get to see the various sub-tasks that are associated with each task. We're going to explore those a little later in some of the other scenes, but for now I just wanted to show you how to navigate your way around the ribbon. So again, you start big by the tabs and then you can just narrow down by these different tab groups or task groups, excuse me, and then the different tasks within each group. Now, if you have your heart set on the old menu command system, you can also click the pop-up window launcher, which is the bottom right of each group. Like, for instance, font. Actually I need to select some text here for that to work. There we go. And I can get a little pop-up window that gives me some of those little menu commands that we're used to. Get out of that and also see how that works for paragraph, like so. While the ribbon is pretty nifty, it does hog quite a bit of the real estate in my work area. Well, luckily for us we can hide the ribbon by double clicking the active tab. Alright. See how that's gone? We still have our tabs. To bring it back, I double click again and the ribbon is there. So if you need to hide the ribbon, double click the active tab and double click to bring it back. Again, we're going to explore the various tasks and sub-tasks later in these tutorials, but for now have some fun exploring and playing with the ribbon.
