Getting Familiar with PowerPoint / Installing PowerPoint

Subtitles of the Movie

Once you are sure that your computer meets the minimum requirements for PowerPoint, you are ready to start the actual installation and the good news is installing PowerPoint is a rather simple task. If you will take your installation CD-ROM and insert it into your computer's CD-ROM drive, and if you wait just a moment, your CD-ROM drive will come to life, and you will soon see the actual installation begin. As you can see there, an installer window will appear and eventually you will see the first setup window. And this is basically telling you that PowerPoint is getting ready to install. What should you do if you never see this installation window appear? Sometimes that happens, a CD-ROM is supposed to auto-start and automatically start the installation for you. But if it doesn't, then you can manually start the installation and here is how you do it. First of all, I am going to minimize this so you can see what to do. Click start if you are on Windows XP and go to my computer. If you are on an earlier version of Windows, such as 98 or ME, my computer is located on your desktop. Just double-click it and if you scroll down, you will locate your actual CD-ROM drive. Right-click the icon and you can either click open or explore, and what you are looking at here is the actual contents of the CD-ROM. These are the installation files that the CD-ROM uses to install PowerPoint on your computer. You will see a setup icon; all you need to do is double-click that setup icon and the installation will start. Once installation begins, the first window that you see asks for some user information. So we will just fill out these dialog boxes and you see the organization option here, if you are not a member of an organization, if you are a home user, you don't have to put in anything here so you can just leave that blank. Now, note that you have to enter the product key; this makes sure that you have a valid version of PowerPoint 2002 and not one that's been stolen, and you will find the product key located at the back of your CD-ROM case; it's a yellow sticker and it says product key. Now what you need to do is to simply enter the information that you see on the back of your CD-ROM case into these dialog boxes. You will have a combination of letters and numbers, and note that the letters are not case-sensitive; you don't have to capitalize them, but you do have to type them correctly and get the correct order. So simply click your mouse button to get into the first box and begin typing those values from the back of your CD-ROM case. When you are done, simply click next. Once you have entered the product key and clicked next, if you are running an upgrade, you will get a "Product Compliance Check" dialog box, such as the one that you see here. Now if you are not upgrading from a previous version of PowerPoint, you will not see this dialog box but in the case of an upgrade, the setup program needs to check your computer to see that you actually own a previous version of PowerPoint. Keep in mind that upgrades are actually less expensive than the full version and so the setup is going to basically check and make sure you are in compliance. As you can see here, it says the setup has failed to locate a valid qualifying product on my computer, and the reason for this is I simply do not have the earlier version of PowerPoint or Office installed on this particular computer. That's no problem though, I do have my installation CD-ROM from the old Office, so under drive I am just going to click the drop-down menu, and choose my other CD-ROM drive, where I have put the older version of Office, and click OK. Setup will then check that CD-ROM and, as you can see, it has already determined that I do, in fact, own a previous version and now we are moving on with the installation. And this window is the "End User License Agreement" and it's a good idea to read through this and see what you are agreeing to and once you're done, simply click I accept, then click next. When it's time to install it, you have a couple of different options. You can choose the install now, or you can choose a complete installation, or a custom installation. Install now installs the most commonly things that you need, the common settings, the common files. There may be some components of PowerPoint that are not installed and when you are using PowerPoint, if you need those options, you will be prompted to insert your CD-ROM drive. If you don't ever want to have to insert the CD-ROM drive again, choose complete, but this is going to take up more disk space. You can also choose custom where you choose different components. Overall your best option is the install now. It gives you mostly what you need without using any more disk space then necessary, and then if you do need something that is not installed, you will simply be prompted to insert the CD-ROM, no problem. Also notice at the bottom that you have an install to option, by default PowerPoint is installed in C:\ProgramFiles\Microsoft Office. You can click browse and choose a different location, if you want, but for most people this default setting is fine. Click next once you are ready to proceed and this is basically a summary window telling you what is going to be installed, the space that is required, and how much you have available, and when you are ready, just click install. Now at this point, the installation program is going to start reading the CD-ROM, pulling information that it needs; it will go through the process of installing files, updating your computer's registry, and a number of other things. And this will take a few moments, so there is nothing for you to do here, let's sit back and relax for a few minutes and once the installation is complete, you will see a message telling you so, just click OK and you are ready to begin using PowerPoint. If you are using an earlier version of Windows, such as Windows 98, you may see a message telling you that you need to reboot your computer, just accept the message so that your computer can reboot and once you come back up, PowerPoint will be installed and you are ready to begin using it.
