Getting Ready to Install PowerPoint 2002. Like most applications PowerPoint 2002 has some system requirements that need to be met in order for the application to be installed, or at least to work well once it is installed. Now system requirements refers to a collection of settings on your computer, including your computer hardware, that PowerPoint needs in order to be able to function. So let's take a look at those and make sure that your computer is ready to handle the demands of PowerPoint 2002. First of all, PowerPoint requires at least a Pentium 133 megahertz or a higher processor. If you are using a newer computer, this probably isn't going to be a difficult problem for you because in today's standards a Pentium 133 is pretty slow, In fact, many computers sold today have a gigahertz processor, so a Pentium 133 by today's standards is rather slow. However, if you are using an older computer or you want to put PowerPoint on an older computer, you will certainly want to take a look at your processor and make sure it can handle the demands of PowerPoint. Now keep in mind that a Pentium 133 is the minimum requirement for the processor and really you want more than this. You want more speed, because with a Pentium 133 PowerPoint 2002 is going to run a little bit slow. If you don't know how to check your processor on your computer, I will show you how just a little later in this tutorial. Next, you will need an operating system, of course, and PowerPoint 2002 will work with Windows 98, Windows 98 second edition, Windows ME, Windows NT with Service pack 6 or later, Windows 2000 Professional, or Windows XP. You will need to be using one of these operating systems in order for PowerPoint to work. You will also need to take a look at the computer's RAM; now RAM refers to Random Access Memory and it is the memory that your computer uses when running programs. PowerPoint has minimum RAM requirements that will be needed in order for the application to work. If you are using Windows 98 or Windows 98 SE, you will need at least 24 megabytes of RAM; Windows ME or Windows NT Workstation or Server, 32 megabytes of RAM; Windows 2000 Professional, 64 megabytes; and Windows XP, at least 128 megabytes. Now again, like processor, it's important to note that the RAM requirements are bare minimums. Ideally you want much more RAM than this for PowerPoint to work the way that you want it to. The minimum requirements that you see here show only what PowerPoint must have in order to function, not what it needs in order to function well, so it's a good idea that you exceed these RAM requirements, and I will show you how to look at your computers RAM in just a moment. A few other things you will need for PowerPoint: You need at least 115 megabytes of free disk space in order to install the application. Most computers today have gigabytes of free disk space on their hard drives so a 115 megabytes is pretty small. That probably will not be a problem for you, but again you'll want to check it out and I will show you how. You will need a CD-Rom drive, for your monitor a Super VGA 800 x 600 resolution or higher, a Microsoft mouse or any compatible pointing device (basically if it works on your computer, it will work on PowerPoint), and some features of PowerPoint 2002 require Internet access. This, of course, isn't required but it's a nice feature to have to take advantage of all that PowerPoint has to offer. If you have purchased an upgrade CD, you will need to have an earlier version of PowerPoint in order to install the upgrade. For PowerPoint 2002, you will need either PowerPoint 97 or 2000 or Microsoft Office Premium, Professional, Standard, or Developer versions of 97 or 2000. If you purchase an upgrade CD, you can't install the upgrade without having one of these previous versions. And that is really all you need. How you can check your computer and see if it meets these minimum requirements? There is a couple of quick things you can do. First of all, if you are using Windows XP click start and go to my computer. Now if you are using Windows 98, ME, or 2000, my computer is located on your desktop. Either way just locate my computer, right-click it, and click properties, and this will open the system properties dialog box. If you look on the general tab, you will see the operating system you are using; you will also see who it's registered to, and then if you look down toward the bottom, you will see the processor you are using, as you can see I am using a Pentium 4, and you will also see the amount of RAM that you have installed. As you can see I well exceed the requirements of both these and I also meet the requirements for the operating system. Now if you want to check your hard disk, you can cancel out of this, again go to my computer and this time just click it to open it, you may need to double click it depending on your operating system, and locate the drive where you are going to install PowerPoint. Generally, this will be your local disk and it's usually labeled C; if you will right-click it and click properties, on the general tab you will see the free disk space that's available, how much you have used. As you can see I have 26 gigabytes of free disk space, which is much more than I need. But this will tell you if you have enough disk space; once you are done here, click cancel, and basically once you are sure that you have met the minimum requirements, you are ready to begin installation.
