PowerPoint Basics / Saving & Exiting

Subtitles of the Movie

Well once you have a presentation you'll need to know how to save it and close out of the program. Basically if you make any changes, (and we will pretend for a moment that I made changes to this presentation) then all I should do is go to file. If I have made edits to the program I am simply going to save. If I want a copy of it, I would choose save as. The difference between save and save as is simply this - if the file already exists and you've made edits to it and you just want to save those edits, then choose save. Save as has two functions - it's for when you first create a new presentation and it hasn't been saved yet. "Save as" is going to ask you "where do you want to save the document?" and "what would you like to call it?". "Save as" will also create a copy of a presentation and if I choose save as right now, I can actually type in a different name for this presentation or save it in another location and I will get a copy of my Powerpoint-2000 presentation. It is always always good to save, trust me. It is very very important that you save on a regular basis, otherwise you will loose what you have. I was once told to save as often as I would like to repeat my work. Well, that means I save about every two minutes, because I don't want to have to repeat anything. If you've been working on something for about 45 minutes and the power goes out, you loose the last 45 minutes of work - so I recommend that you save often. There is also a button here for saving this little diskette, and the shortcut for saving is CTRL+S. When you are finished working in Powerpoint you can go to file to exit - close out of the program by clicking on the very top X on the upper right hand corner, or use the shortcut, which is ALT+F4. And you can exit out of the program. In the very next chapter we are going to talk about creating new presentations.
